Interesting topics. WAY WAY WAY to much reading assigned. Midterm very difficult and composed of the most random questions. It's one of those classes taught like its the only class you have that quarter.
She provides very good information over topics that are somewhat interesting, however the class is based on the assigned readings more than anything. You must know every detail and be able to distinguish between 30-40 sources for the tests that are essay only. NOT an easy class!
Unless you're a history major just do the pass/no pass route. A very hard class with brainwashed TAs, and impossible tests. Despite the fact the subject matter is actually interesting, avoid this class.
This is honestly the worst teacher I've ever had the displeasure of having at UCSB. I USED to be a history major until i took this class, the operative phrase being "used to be"...i am now looking for a new major...Poli Sci here i come!
She makes you know EVERYTHING in the class for tests and you have to do ALL of the readings. Dont buy the textbook its a waste of money. Attendance is mandatory, she gives random pop quizzes and the paper is long and you can only use the reader as a source. Avoid her
she knows her stuff and is obviously interested in what shes teaching but the tests are extremely hard and there is pop quizzes in lecture so you have to go and pay attention. the textbook is useless, dont read it, you have to read the reader though, all questions come from it. lots of homework reading and studying. dont take if not a history major
worst teacher. hard to follow, if you miss class--the notes online does not help at all. ex: one slide showed a picture of a building with no explanation. a lot of the slides are like that. do not take this teacher.
She has very interesting information about history. She likes to keep a C average in the class.
if you miss class, her powerpoints online does not help at all. totally useless.
Nice lady. However was very academic. Pay attention in her class because she takes her tests from her lectures.
Midterm had insanely hard questions. This was the only upper division history test I didn't get at least a B plus on. Then she wondered why we did so poorly (mean was low 70s) after asking obscure questions. Lectures leave much to be desired and focus too much on Byzantine court struggles and religion, she only spent 5 minutes on the Gallic War!
Class was extremely boring and the tests focused on seemingly insignificant historical facts
I didn't really enjoy Digeser as a lecturer, sometimes it takes her awhile to get across what's she's trying to say. The class is easy, and you do NOT need to read the book AT ALL. Make sure you throughly review all the pictures she uses in her powerpoints for the midterm and final. My TA was amazing so i got a good grade. Overall, an easy class.
Good professor, really likes Roman and Greek history. Always excited and enthusiastic even at 9AM in the morning. Class is sort of hard since you cover 5000 years of history in about 10 weeks. Like most professors don't except to fall in love with her in a 450 person lecture. Very helpful in putting materials online.
She wasn't that bad, but you can tell that the information you are responsible for is all written down on her outline, but she goes off of it on random tangents that there is no need for you to know. One TA substituted her class and when Digeser normally runs out of time, she got through all info in 20 min. Says "um" A LOT
very hard
She's definitely one of the best lecturers in ucsb. Just go to her lectures and you won't even have to buy the textbook. Most of the important things are from the reader. I enjoyed her lectures cus they were very clear and interesting. I met her a couple times and she really nice and understanding. One of the best history classes ever =)
She is great teacher. Her lectures were clear and to the point. If it wasn't for the 8 am factor, I would have attended every class!
Good lecturer, really knew how to pull the material together. Tests were fair; essay topics could be a little unusual. I only spoke with her once, but in my experience she was very sympathetic and helpful. I felt like reading through the textbook helped me a lot.
Professor Digeser is very knowledgable, however in a large lecture class like 4A it is hard to be a good orator. She came off as being snobbish and "too smart" to deal with students. For an intro. course her essays were too long with boring topics.
8am class which I went about 4 times total in the quarter and got a B, as long as you study and go to discussion your fine. Feel bad because she puts a lot of work into her lectures but people don't seem to enjoy it a lot of reading material though.
I liked her teaching style, and found a lot of lectures to be somewhat interesting. Sometimes they were boring, but I think that had alot to do with the time slot (8am). Overall she is a pretty good professor. Her test are relatively easy (as long as you study, you should be fine).
Her teaching style is very clear and as long as you're there for every lecture you definitely pick up on what she's going to test you on.
She is the most boring lecturer ever. I've never fallen asleep in a class so much as in this one.
