Very interesting class but be warned its a lot of work. A midterm every 2 weeks (3) then one cumulative final. Theres a lot of information to memorize but if u read and go to class u can do well. Go to the ta review sessions. Not an easy A but useful and interesting information. And the baldwins are adorable.
John and Janice Baldwin are both great professors and are experts in their fields: human sexuality. The class is challenging. The material is very interesting and knowledge that everyone should have, but be prepared to study a lot and devote a lot of your time to this class if you want an A. Both textbook and lecture material are on the tests.
An average professor. Human sexuality will already provoke you interest (because it's sex...) but the teaching is only decent. They could have done a much better job, rather than using cartoons to teach half of the class. That being said, the information in this class is pretty important, so you should probably just take it.
Even if you know the 50-100 definitions for each test that are given every 2 weeks and the answers to all the 30 or so short answer questions a good part of the test is on other material. The TA's make the study guide not the professors so the info that is tested on is often not in the study guide. I studied for 15 hrs and got a C on the last exam
The professors in this class need to chat with the gender studies and sociology professors... The material (though well-intentioned) was se xist, EXTREMELY hetero-normative, and SEVERELY lacked radical critique... they ACTUALLY argued that overpopulation is the cause of global hunger. There was no opportunity for argument (600 person class).
most overrated class at ucsb. lectures are terrible. teaching with comics and messy outlines that might as well not be on the screen are irrelevent. too big of a class, inconsistent grading from course assistants. you can never get a clear reason as to why you didnt receive the points you thought you deserved.
If you know anything about radical sex politics don't take this class. The Baldwins are extremely hetero-normative. They don't understand gender identity and make jokes about "non-normal" sexual preferences. They think they're being inclusive and fun but really they're offending lots of already silenced voices.
Content is interesting but the Baldwin's aren't as great as they're made out to be...most annoying thing is that they pick out the most obscure details in the textbook and test you on it.
This was one of the best classes I've taken at UCSB. The Baldwin's are so knowledgeable and make going to lecture fun. You can tell that they truly love to teach. This is NOT an easy A. There were 3 midterms and 1 cumulative final that required a lot of studying. Course assistant reviews were GOLD! Definitely a class everyone should take :)
good teacher.
this is a class mainly for soc majors, unless you want to study alot. lectures are interesting but there is a lot of studying. The graders are horrible seriously horrible. they rank the best answer of 600 students and then choose the best and then grade your. i will recommend attend the lectures but dont take the class unless you really want to stu
The class kind of prepares you for any type of romance, procreation, kids and family matters more than you would think from a sex class. Strongly recommend anyone at UCSB to take this class; it's not too hard, basically if you study the book and go to lecture you'll do fine. Teachers really love their students, are great people and a cute couple.
The Baldwins are awesome professors. Adorable couple and not awkward at all! I've only missed one class because I was deathly ill because the class is so interesting. They are great and keep your attention. They wrote the book so it follows lectures very well. Great class!
The Baldwins are amazing professors! They are extremely friendly, entertaining, and want you to do well. Reading the book, including the side boxes, is NECESSARY to do well in the class. Overall, an interesting and relatively easy class, as long as you pay attention to details and study mildly. Lecture is a must-tests split 50/50 between read/lect.
Really interesting class and the profs are super enthusiastic about teaching. The tests are difficult so don't mistake this class for an easy A. You actually have to read the book and remember lecture to do well. Overall great class. I was able to learn a lot.
Very interesting, even if you think you have nothing to learn this class will surprise you! The exams are easy if you read and attend class and are interested. Midterms (3) are 5 essays (choose 4 to do) and 5 multiple choice questions. The final is completely cumulative but luckily it's curved!
Took this class for units. Class is very informative but you literally need to read the entire textbook, go to every lecture and memorize everything--I'm not exaggerating. Baldwins are funny but slides are somewhat difficult to follow and they go fast. 3 exams plus final is cumulative. Go to review sessions for study guide packet info & CLAS class
Amazing course and amazing teachers!! Originally just wanted to take it for fun, but now I'm motivated to strive for the honors course. Highly entertaining, and the professors have great control of attention and amazing public speaking skills. Very valuable course
this class should be a graduation requirement, you learn things to actually apply to your life, the Baldwins are engaging teachers and so much fun. they care about their students and the topic and it shows. tests are fair. they want you to succeed! the best class i have taken at UCSB. absolutely loved it.
Maybe the greatest class I have ever taken. It is a challenging class so if ur goal in college is to learn nothing and you never want to attend class don't take this course. Prof Baldwin is one of the most engaging prof I have ever had and is very helpful outside class. MUST TAKE!!! This is one of those rare classes!!!
Fantastic course. Probably one of the most important classes you can take at UCSB in terms of what it teaches you about human sexuality, a subject that is rarely given the attention it deserves. Not an easy class, however. There is a lot of material, and exam questions are generated at random. Take it pass/no pass or be ready to study a lot for an
I had him for Soc 152A and Soc 142. He is an awesome teacher with fun and interesting lectures. The class is NOT easy and requires that you do the reading. There is a lot of memorization involved but as long as you attend lecture you will enjoy the subject and it will make studying a lot easier. Soc 142 was easier than Soc 152A but take both!
i thought this class would be interesting. but it's difficult and made me feel uncomfortable. take at your own risk.
SOC MAJORS- take any and all of Baldwins classes! I had him for 152A 142 and 185P and enjoyed all of them. To do well you need to read and attend lecture, the material is interesting and worth the work! His short answer test format allows you to write what you know and get a fair grade. He cares about his students so go to his office hours!
