I got a solid A on all three midterms and ended up with a B in the class because of the final, which was way harder than necessary. They were both very entertaining and the class was great. READ THE BOOK and OUTLINE it! The tests are mostly essay questions with a few multiple choice.
I took this class back in 1991. It seems that it has not changed. They show you explicit films for the first few weeks and then tell you how to run your life in a condescending way after the drop date. Abortion, emotional tirades about AIDS and****are emotional/philosophical topics and have NO place in a class about the SCIENCE of sex.
I have taken all 3 of Baldwin's classes offered at UCSB and he is one of my favorites! He has the most passion of every teacher I have met and is so excited to help students and teach. He makes you feel excited about the material as well and his enthusiasm is contagious. The tests are comprehensive but as long as you read thoroughly, you're good!
Great class! Teachers are hilarious together. Just go to class and take notes. Reading helps, but the review sessions can save you from most of it! 3 midterms: about 5 multiple choice and answer 4 out of 5 essay questions. Format's weird the first time.
Very popular, but I don't know why. Teaches like the students are 12, does nto seem to have updated the lectures for 20 years, a bit cheesy. The sex class is not for those of us who are older, it would be a great class for freshman Tests are hard, the format is not short answers but the questions are not straight forward, do the reading
Don't take this class if you're not a freshman and/or know how to put on a condom. Sriously, the class is for prudes. I learned nothing new that I didn't know before. Plus, they are a little creepy...
the professors are very nice, but the class was harder than it should be. the reviews were pointless, and the TAs were not very approachable. study EVERYTHING about aids for this class.
Because they teach as a couple, the Baldwin's are fun and bounce lecture topics off each-other. However, their knowledge on things not related to sex that they still lecture on (like the Catholic church) is limited. Fun class, but do not take it if you do not want to be fed liberal propaganda.
Awesome class. Just read the book and attend lectures most of the time and you get an easy A. Tests are based off lecture/reading and are pretty easy if you listened or read. They are great speakers and make the class very entertaining
Definitely a fun class. The professors are hilarious. It is kind of a lot of reading but it's interesting material, and the lectures are pretty interesting. Tests are hard if you don't study, but if you take good notes and read you'll be fine.
This class was waaay harder than the comments made it oi though it was going to be. For the tests you need to know EVERY little bit of information from the lectures and everything from the textbook chapters. This class requires soooooo much time and studying doesn't even guarantee a good grade because they will randomly put things on the test.
Both their voices are horribly monotone and got really annoying after awhile. The class felt like it was very pre packaged with not a lot of spontaneity, you can tell they do the EXACT same thing every quarter. Tests were harder than they should be, and you pretty much just have to study EVERYTHING. Reviews were worthless. TAs were jerks.
Good professor, really physical, he jumps around a lot and its funny. His tests are terrible and his graders have nothing to do with the students, they just grade ultra objectively and I am upset I wasted 10 weeks in this class.
1. Do not expect to take this as an easy elective class. 2. Tests are on book and lecture material about 40% book 60% lecture. 3. Study sessions offered are simply past students reading a freaking printed out outline that they don't just print for you and save you 3 hours of copying it down. 4. Take notes (esp. lists), test q's are pretty specific.
Very interesting and informative class. I recommend to all. It's a husband & wife teaching. THree midterms and a final. There are review sessions before each test..make sure you go. Pay attention in lecture and do your reading and it should be an easy A.
John is really nice and the class is great. attend all lectures and read the book. it is a lot but very interesting!
The class is not as easy as the comments are making it out to be. The TA's take their role too seriously and detract the attention from actually retaining information to matching their exact demands on the exam. TA's are aweful while the prof. are simply ok. Subject matter is interesting but lectures can be rather dull. Take at ur own risk.
Hands down, the worst teacher i have ever had.
Baldwin is an excellent teacher. He is easy to understand and follow and speaks very clear. As long as you go to his lecture which are interesting than you should do fine in the class. He is also very helpful. Don't hesitate to ask him something you don't know or understand.
I have taken 3 classes from John: Soc 152A, 142, and 185P. Read the book and go to all the lectures because the tests are very difficult!! He is a very animated lecturer which keeps the classes pretty interesting. I would definitely recommend him.
The class was a lot of work. Make sure to go to class because they will test on random things they only say in lecture. The TA reviews are extremely helpful, they tell you absolutely everything that could be on the test. Don't go to John or email him if you have any questions, he is rude and unhelpful. Janice is pretty nice and helpful though.

I definitely did not expect this class to be as much work as it was. I wish I had never taken it! There is alot of stuff that you have to know and they only test you on a very small portion of it. There are like 4 tests and they are all short answer and they are graded really harshly. My advice: If you don't have to, don't take it.
i dont get the negative comments, the baldwins were awesome and so cute! this class requires a lot of attendance and reading, but its interesting and well worth it.
