Lectures are very easy to follow along too, where he gets you is the homework. Often times there will be problems that weren't (and never will be!) covered in the lecture. You will sink hours of your time fearing they will be on the exam. This becomes worse in 34B. He has good intentions but is far from a competent professor.

4A was a simple, straightforward class. I took it online. I enjoyed his lectures very much, he is a funny guy and gives lots of extensions if you just ask. However, I cant say that I really remember anything from this class a year later. Essentially, youll do fine, but its difficult to get a deeper understanding of the material.

Relies on slides too heavily. Most of the time the homework questions he assigns are confusing because he doesn't really know what he assigns. Went to all of his office hours. He seemed like he cared about being friends with students but didn't really care about teaching. It's an easy class if you go to CLAS.

Professor Garfield is not a good Professor. He did not respond to my messages at all and did not respond or help when I needed to improve my grade by half a letter in order to not have to take the class again. His lectures are not helpful and confusing.

If you take this class and go to the CLAS tutoring, do the homework (like actually try and solve them not just search them up), and do practice tests you'll get an A. I rarely used to get an A in math but by putting in the work I got a A+. Plus he has a thing where if you put in the effort by doing all the ass you automatically get a B.

Easy A if you sign up for CLAS and do practice exams, they are exactly like the tests. Theres hw after every lecture but it is easy and you can get a 95% with it being 2 weeks late. Post on nectar if you didnt go to class and you will still get an A in participation! hes a great professor as long as you try to put in a little effort!

Peter is a real stand up guy. Honestly, my fav proff @UCSB so far. He was so accessible outside of class and really cared about each individual student. He honestly made me feel like I meant something at UCSB and wasn't just a statistic. Definitely go to CLAS and office hours. PRACTICE EXAMS ARE KEY TO DOING WELL!!

This class is fairly easy if you put in some effort. He lets you use an index card on each exam. However, I did not like his lecture style he seemed pretty condescending at times.

Very lenient on homework due dates; gives you 95% even if its a week late, lets you use a cheat sheet on exams, makes jokes during class, and truly tries to get to know his students who also try to get to know him, the textbook is rarely used but did offer a pdf version of it.

Would 100% recommend for a 34A professor. His lectures aren't too boring, and he is always available to answer any questions. There are multiple versions of practice midterms/finals, and studying those promises you a good grade as long as you have been paying attention to the material. Yet; The homework can be way harder than the tests/class q's.

Hilarious professor and overall great guy. Pay attention in class, do the homework, and it's an easy A. iclicker counts for participation but you can do it from bed. Great class for people who haven't taken a calc class before but can sometimes be confusing for those who have(take MATH 3A instead).

Makes it so easy to pass the class. Practice midterms and practice finals are nearly identical to the real thing. Professor is very approachable and understanding allowing for makeup midterms and finals.

As long as you understand basic mathematical concepts and work a little every day, this class is a breeze

Professor Peter is a GEM. Adore this man to bits, he is so fun in lectures and makes the class so passable. I am okay at math and this was not a struggle, a good pick for those avoiding the 2/3 series! Will miss this class dearly, what a good time!

The grade was mainly based on homework/participation and he gave a quiz every week and a final. The quizzes and final were super similar to homework and even if they weren't, he taught everything you needed to know in lecture. He is literally awesome and I would definitely take his class again.

i had garfield for math 4a in fall, 6a in winter, and now 4b in spring this quarter. he's such a caring and accommodating professor. his lecture examples cover all concepts u will need for hw, and quizzes/final are all really similar to hw. if u see garfield teaching a class, take him, u wont regret it! :)

Took this course in Spring 2021. He is famous for extending hw deadlines for the whole class. The hw is manageable. The quizzes are never unexpected. There was no midterm. The final is worth 2 quizzes and he drops the lowest 2 quizzes, so if u do well in weekly quizzes u can not take the final. U can also use Mathematica in the final. Choose him.

Took this course during Winter 2021. This is my second math class with Professor Garfield. His PowerPoints are clear and straight to the point. The weekly quizzes all based on hw and lecture. There was no midterm. The final basically worth 2 or 3 quizzes. He also taught us some Mathematica codes, which is very useful. Choose him if you can.

Took this course during Fall 2020. Professor Garfield is probably the best professor you can have for this class. He is funny and caring. He splits the course into mini-lectures and homework that are completely manageable. The weekly quizzes are easy. There was no midterm. The final basically worth 2 or 3 quizzes. Choose him if you can.

This is the second class I have taken with Prof. Garfield, and he's a really nice guy. His explanation of the concepts were a little shaky, but he makes the class very easy to pass. The only big complaint I have is that he sometimes takes too long to grade the quizzes.

Peter is definitely an awesome professor. I have taken his Math 4A in the fall, Math 6A in the winter, and now am taking his Math 4B. Got two A+s for the two completed courses. He will never fail you. His grading includes 50% HW, 40% Quiz & final exam, and 10% participation of his OH and nectir posts.

Took 4B and 6B with Prof. Garfield. Short lecture with clear pdf notes. He is a nice guy and always makes jokes during lectures and office hours. Be sure to understand the concept of calculation, instead of just remember the formula, since he seems to prefer asking the definition and concepts knowledge in the exames. Good luck!

Garfield isn't the best at teaching but his classes are definitely easy to get a good grade in with a basic understanding of the material. His GS page is extremely well organized. He gave weekly quizzes, no midterm, and lectures and homework posted mon, weds, and fri of every week plus a final. Gave lots of hw extensions. Overall, great prof!

Peter is so kind and friendly, but youll have to read the textbook in order to understand the content better. His lectures are not so helpful. You can still get an A if you cant master every content.
