he is a king and even if he is a bit quiet he is very nice. he cares about having people get good grades. i wish people laughed at his jokes more in lecture
Super super chill guy. He actually wants his students to succeed and is super accessible if you need help. The tests are easy compared to the homework and study guides, and doing well in the class is definitely super achievable!
Porter was very reasonable in the exams. As long as you did the homework and review packets, you can get an A.
Overall, he's a caring professor, but the workload is very heavy. He assigned 48 questions and 18 pages of review due right before the final, then changed the deadline to after the exam, which wasted my time. The review was also much harder than the actual test. Because of the workload, I wouldn't retake this class.
You can tell he cares a lot about his students and genuinely wants them to do good in class. His tests are easy if you understand the review worksheet he gives us before midterms. He posts his lecture notes and a video that explains the notes on canvas. He also tells us what topics will be the most important on the final exam. Super chill guy.
amazing professor, cares very much for his student. I had him for 2A and 2B and he is super accessible. Responds to emails in a timely manner, has office hours 2-3 days a week, and really wants to help you succeed. Makes expectations really clear.
Porter is a great professor, although he would mumble to himself when doing work in lecture. Difficulty wise, its a higher level of math so its difficult. Exams are so much easier than the HW and practice exams. Just talk to him and ask questions, both Porter and the TA's are great. Grading is fair, just make sure HW does not pile up!
beware he is a confusing professor with his notes be overfilled and he does mumble to himself but honestly the way he set up the class is so nice. he post all completed notes, if you do better on the final can overtake one out of the two midterms, and can do late hw problems for half credit for each problem.
It's math- it's not going to be the most interesting class ever. But, Professor Porter is very accomodating and understanding. He posts lecture videos so you can review confusing lessons. Tests are much easier than practice tests and homework. He seems like a really good guy.
Grading was fair and the curve was generous at the end of the class. Just make sure to stay on top of your homework and the lectures as it can pile up. I had never taken any calculus prior to this class, but it was still manageable for me.
Before taking this course, I used to love math, HOWEVER, Matt Porter made me hate calculus and anything it had to offer. Although it was my first time taking a calculus course, Porter made it 100 times harder to understand and made me dread going to class. In short, if you are looking to pass Math 2A with a good grade, DO NOT take Matt Porter.
terrible, seriously. his lectures are monotone and just examples, no real explanations of how to do the work. i spent a majority of the class teaching myself. the homework took hours but at least it was a good cushion for grading. he curves the grades at the end a lot but that doesn't change the fact that his teaching abilities are nonexistent
His lectures are equivalent to a double dose of valium, he makes no effort to explain topics clearly and basically just whisper mumbles through a few irrelevant examples. He cancels class pretty often, and on multiple occasions he just did not show up to class, forcing 100 students to get out of bed at 8am and come to class for no reason.
I really liked Matt. I took him for Math 2A this fall quarter, and was surprised about how easy the subject was. It was most of the things covered in my Highschool AP Calculus AB class, so the content is not too challenging. If you do the Webworks (weekly assignments), you already secure yourself a C. The rest is really on your test performances.
best math professor i've ever had
I rated him 5 as a person but as a professor, he is impossible to learn from. The lectures are only offered twice a week at 8 am and the way he teaches is bent over a podium talking in a very monotone voice, which is painful at 8 am. Not much to learn from him, I learned more from calculus youtube videos than what I learned going to his lectures.
Lectures are not mandatory, but helpful in learning the material. Porter is very accessible through email or office hours, and explains concepts very clearly and thoroughly. Exams were pretty easy and similar to practice exams. He is very accommodating (exam 2 and final exam were take home due to the TA strike) and just a nice person in general!
I'm pretty bad at math but prof Porter was super good and easy to understand! I would definitely take him again. His grading was super fair and the exam review problems were very similar to the tests.
If you have the option, TAKE PORTER. Best decision ever. He is extremely nice and easygoing. His lectures were clear to understand. Make sure to try and get high scores on all your webworks as your grade depends on the homework and exams mostly.
Great professor! Super approachable, very nice about questions and all. The tests were super straightforward -- easier than the webwork and around the same as the review assignments. The class was relatively difficult, especially if you've never done calculus before, but definitely doable if you put the work in.
Math 2A is difficult if you have minimal pre-calculus experience, but doable. If you need help, utilize his office hours along with math lab and CLAS. Lectures are not mandatory, but would highly recommend attending, 8 am makes it easy to skip, but going will save your grade.
Genuinely cares about his students and their well-being. Took it during Fall 21 and the final exam was online. Lecture attendance doesn't matter but section attendance does count.
Had Prof Porter for MATH 2A/2B and was able to do well on both with no precalculus experience beforehand. His lectures are a bit monotonous, but if you take notes and go to mathlab to complete the homework assignments you will grasp the content just fine. The grading scale is very fair and the study guides are quite reflective of the test material.
Good lecturer, would recommend going every time because they really help me understand the material. Homework can take forever sometimes, but does help me get it. Tests are like the practice work but easier.
