ARTHI 6E - Survey: Arts of Africa, Oceania, and Native North America
Explores how cultural encounters shaped the history of globalization from antiquity to the present by evaluating the long history of Africa-Europe encounters as revealed through visual culture. Uses the landmark publication The Image of the Black in Western Art as a principal framework for exploring the long history of African presence in Europe from classical antiquity to the present. Through analysis of paintings, sculpture, manuscripts, mosaics, prints, decorative arts, and photography, students examine how images of Africans in Western art illuminate commercial exchange, religious devotion, diplomacy, military alliances, migration, artistic patronage, and cultural interaction across continents.
