Art History - ARTHI

This seminar introduces theoretical and practical issues of curatorial practice. "Curating" is understood here as mediation, invention, and problem-solving; a field of production of symbolic representations in as much as political ones, and is used almost indiscriminately to explain exercises of association within the cultural field. Students will analyze case studies and the opportunities of curating, and will acknowledge curating requires skills to trace misunderstandings, omissions, and conflicts of exhibitions. Students will identify the politics of representation at stake in curatorial practice which involve institutions, research methods, aesthetics and design, dynamics of inclusion and exclusion, as well as public participation.

Prerequisites: Sophomore standing or higher.
