The arrival of psychoanalysis in the cultural, medical and scientific landscapes of the early 20th century changed Western thought profoundly. This course introduces psychoanalytic theory, from its origins in Sigmund Freud’s Vienna to the present. It discusses, among other topics: Freud’s four decades of theorizing; the most influential revisions to the theory after Freud by Klein, Winnicott, Lacan, and others; the history of dialogue and distrust between psychoanalysis and neuroscience; the influence of psychoanalysis in the psychotherapeutic field today; and psychoanalytic theory as a framework for the interpretation of societies, literature and the arts.
