Looks at surveillance in anthropology and related social studies/humanistic disciplines. Engages work on observing, the power dynamics of watching and being watched, and technologies of surveying and surveillance—from colonial ethnography to contemporary regimes of data collection. Readings examine state surveillance, policing, bureaucracy, and digital platforms, alongside less formal practices of monitoring embedded in care, labor regimes, humanitarianism, and everyday life. Emphasizing ethnographic approaches, the course attends to how surveillance is lived, felt, and unevenly distributed. Also explores refusal, protest, opacity, and counter-surveillance as political and ethical responses.

CollegeShe is very unorganized and does not communicate anything properly at all. I sent so many emails that were completely ignored. She is strict about absences even if they are excused with proof. Assignments were fairly easy, but instructions were always super unclear. This was for her enthnograpby class btw
The lecture has a no devices policy so beware of that. The actual content of the class is pretty interesting and she's an engaging lecturer. The articles are super interesting. The midterm and final are both easy and take about 25 min. The hardest part is the film final project.
Lectures were interesting but no devices allowed. Attendance is taken randomly. There is a textbook but she covers the concepts in class. There's weekly readings with discussion posts but the articles are super interesting. Midterm and final were both multiple choice and less than 30 minutes. Was really engaging, would take again.
Very unorganized and failed to mention information all the time. She is extremely type B and last minute tells you very important information. Rarely response to emails, and didn't grade anything until THE DAY grades were due on gold. One the plus side, her class was very easy. This is for Anth 197ER btw
Organization was kind of confusing, and polices the use of laptops/phones/tablets/any electronic devices for no reason. Very easy class though, just skim the readings and show up to section (lecture optional). Most difficult part about the class was the final project. Make sure to plan that out.
Lectures are entertaining and easy to follow. She doesn't allow laptops in class, but you can ask the TA for permission. The hardest part for me was a final project where we had to find people to interview and film a video. Final is multiple choice and is pretty straightforward. You can easily skim the readings and get by.
