A survey of gender and sexuality in film that traverses the onscreen and industrial representation of configurations of both gender and sexuality throughout history and transnationally. Along with film theory informed by feminist, queer, and critical race studies, topics may include the male gaze, the monstrous feminine, female subjectivity, the oppositional gaze, New Queer Cinema, industry inequities, and female and/or queer filmmakers. Each week, students will attend lecture and screening to become familiar with feminist and queer critical analytical tools to augment film analysis related to the many permutations of gender and sexuality articulated in film from early cinema to the present.
