Provides hands-on training in the modeling of watershed and river processes that shape freshwater systems and influence water resources management. Students learn to build, visualize, and interpret both data and models of hydrologic flow, erosion, sediment transport, and river hydraulics using open-source and agency tools (e.g., SWAT, HEC-RAS, InVEST, and R/Python workflows). Emphasis is placed on (1) developing process understanding, (2) learning modeling tools and modeling best practices and (3) visualizing and communicating results. Students will design, apply, and communicate modeling workflows to analyze hydrologic and geomorphic processes and their management under change.

Russ is a very caring guy and is always open to talk about the course. The course was definitely pretty loaded with assignments and he mentions that this course is going to be very challenging but rewarding. Taught the course with Sally Hollbrook. Big project that you start working on from week 5 onwards.

Schmitt is a great professor. Teaches from slides on GS but adds lots of details and personal knowledge from years of experience. Enthusiastic about the subject matter and loves to exhibit prior students that are succeeding in science fields. Fairly easy hw in sections, with all free response tests that base on understanding not memorization

No iClickers/textbook/attendance. A mandatory section meets once a week, w hw that involves reading sci. papers and answering questions on them. can take a LONG time. Schmitt is mellow. Just reads off the lecture slides which are on GS. Tests are all free response, although info is easy, they grade strict. Class is easy B, but def. not easy A.
