In this course, we will examine how language is used in social and symbolic meaning-making and learn about forms of linguistic marginalization, empowerment, and social change. Strengthening our sociological understanding of the role of language and language practices in shaping power and inequality within social groups, organizations, and across societies, can support improvements in the accuracy of our sociological descriptions, broaden the impact of interviews and surveys by integrating questions and formats for linguistically diverse populations, and further the field’s understanding about how language shapes culture.

The professor is very kind and knowledgeable but the way the class is graded is somewhat frustrating as you have to essentially get a perfect score on every single assignment to get an A. I found the material very interesting but as there aren't many assignments, it is easy for your grade to slip with missing attendance or participation points.

Do not take this course. Anyone who has taken her would agree that she is not even educated on what she is teaching. Reads directly off of her slides the entire lecture and expects the class to elaborate on what is on her slides. And this is the biggest thing, this prof says the words umm or uhhh maybe 450 times throughout an hour long lecture.

Class is an easy A, but the lectures felt long, and there were awkward silences sometimes. She kinda just reads off the slides the whole time or had guest lecturers. I don't know how to explain it, but her personality was off-putting and just not super genuine. She is a new professor, so I guess she's still figuring out how to teach the class.

super boring. lectures are just read off a slideshow. easy work but the professor is one of the more boring ive ever had. I felt like this could've been a really interesting class if it was taught by a more passionate and engaging professor. I literally plat block blast all class to keep from falling asleep.

She is a very chill and understanding professor! If you are struggling with a concept, just go to her office hours, she helped me brainstorm ideas. It's hard to fail when all you have to do is participate in class and just have 5 critical responses + 3 essays for the whole course.

This professor uses iClicker but posts the slides online. If you are someone who likes to skip class, you only get two unexcused absences/excused with a DR note. Her lectures are boring and don't make sense. She never reaches a conclusion when speaking so you are just left confused wondering what the takeaway is. HW is easy and just busy work.
