CollegeThe better of two midterms is 60% of grade, final is 40%. No homework. Attendance helpful, not mandatory. Schooler is a good lecturer; very knowledgeable, welcoming, and enthusiastic. Need to buy textbook. Class is not too difficult, but requires lots of memorization from readings/lectures. Long but helpful study guides. Extra credit opportunities.
The final was nothing like the two mid-terms difficulty wise. The midterms are 60% of your grade and final is 40%, he will give extra credit where you make exam questions and if he uses them he will give you more points. You basically make the exam for him. Doesn't even show up for the exams only TAs lectures aren't on the slides which don't help.
I stopped going to lectures after the third week because attendance wasn't mandatory and I found the lectures very boring. Rely on the textbook for studying, his study guides could use some refinement; they're absurdly long yet some questions on the exams weren't even mentioned in the guide. Thankfully the class is pretty easy & intuitive.
Schooler is definitely a research first kind of professor, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. He is clearly passionate about the field of psychology as he has done research in it, but his lectures were dry and I felt very bored in class. The content itself is easy to understand, especially if you're interested in it. Two midterms, one final.
Professor Schooler has been my favorite professor here at UCSB so far! He is extremely knowledgeable and would answer any questions students asked with ease and detail. His tests were a bit hard, but reading the textbook and making flashcards helped. Going to his office hours helps a lot too. I would definitely take one of his classes again.
Dr. Schooler unfortunately seemed like the type of tenured professor to only care about his research and not at all about his classes. His lecture style included using confusing verbiage and elaborating off slides that barely provided any information. He also didn't post his lectures anywhere. Final grade was just your highest midterm + final
