The better of two midterms is 60% of grade, final is 40%. No homework. Attendance helpful, not mandatory. Schooler is a good lecturer; very knowledgeable, welcoming, and enthusiastic. Need to buy textbook. Class is not too difficult, but requires lots of memorization from readings/lectures. Long but helpful study guides. Extra credit opportunities.
The final was nothing like the two mid-terms difficulty wise. The midterms are 60% of your grade and final is 40%, he will give extra credit where you make exam questions and if he uses them he will give you more points. You basically make the exam for him. Doesn't even show up for the exams only TAs lectures aren't on the slides which don't help.
I stopped going to lectures after the third week because attendance wasn't mandatory and I found the lectures very boring. Rely on the textbook for studying, his study guides could use some refinement; they're absurdly long yet some questions on the exams weren't even mentioned in the guide. Thankfully the class is pretty easy & intuitive.
Schooler is definitely a research first kind of professor, but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. He is clearly passionate about the field of psychology as he has done research in it, but his lectures were dry and I felt very bored in class. The content itself is easy to understand, especially if you're interested in it. Two midterms, one final.
40/60 course. Final was cumulative and study guide was HUGE. Super difficult to know what to study. Gave the option to get one extra credit point for writing a final exam question and another extra point if he ended up using it. So pretty much you write the exam for him. Attendance not mandatory, interesting topics, but not very interesting class.
This was one of my favorite and most interesting upper div courses! Schooler is hilarious and his lectures are always so informational and engaging. Your grade is only based on exams so going to lecture and reading the book is important. He loves when students ask questions, and is overall a great professor!
Professor Schooler has been my favorite professor here at UCSB so far! He is extremely knowledgeable and would answer any questions students asked with ease and detail. His tests were a bit hard, but reading the textbook and making flashcards helped. Going to his office hours helps a lot too. I would definitely take one of his classes again.
Dr. Schooler unfortunately seemed like the type of tenured professor to only care about his research and not at all about his classes. His lecture style included using confusing verbiage and elaborating off slides that barely provided any information. He also didn't post his lectures anywhere. Final grade was just your highest midterm + final
the grades for this class are based solely on two midterms and a final. this wasnt rly an issue tho because the class is pretty easy. he does give a study guide but it basically says to study everything. the concepts are pretty intuitive so not too hard to learn and Schooler is passionate about the material
Despite what a lot of people say, I really liked him! The test questions were half things from the book and half things in lecture. So as long as you pay attention during those, you should get an A. His lectures were also really entertaining and had a lot of interactive features. He does sometimes speed through material, but not too bad.
the only thing in the grade is 1 midterm worth 60% and a final worth 40% (you take two midterms and he keeps only your highest score).he is very passionate about his teaching & loves answering questions. The ta was also very nice and responsive, both were willing to work around your schedule if you couldn't make it to office hours. loved the class
Schooler is very well-known in the psych field so he def knows his stuff. He clarifies so much in office hours so go ask your questions there! Reading was the only issue I had since it's not the most efficient way to learn but you have to read to get A's on the exams. There was an extremely generous curve given so an A is definitely doable!
