As a state, California is the site of tremendous diversity in the visual arts but has consistently suffered from stereotypes that framed it as a regional backwater far from New York and Europe. This lecture-based course addresses the character and role of the post-war art and its developments in and beyond the cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco. Movements studied include Mexican Muralism, the rise of modern photography, Asian American culture, assemblage and sculpture, the Black Arts movement, feminism, as well as pioneering developments in installation, video and performance art.

Topic: art in california. Great class! Great professor! Super interesting and inspiring if you are interested in your current (or permanent) home state and its art history. Only 1 paper; 3 pages long. 1 midterm 1 final. Readings online. Sorkin is super cool, sarcastically funny, and lectured well. A great experience over all.
LOVED Professor McLemore! Learned a lot about different artwork in her class. Lecture attendance isn't mandatory but the exams are on what she says in class, so you will pass as long as you take notes and attend lectures. Section attendance is mandatory but TAs explain in great detail what was covered in the lecture. She has clear study guides!
Very sweet and accommodative professor. The lectures are a little boring as a non-arthi major. This was my first Arthi class and while I didn't enjoy it too much for the subject, it was clear how much the professor cared about her students.
If you are a student who values communication with professors, don't take her class. She is unapproachable, rude, passive aggressive and impatient. Additionally, any time I participated in class discussions or express an opinion I had about an art piece or text, she would take my words completely out of context and assume that I was bigoted.
This professor's lectures are some of the most boring and rambly, I've ever been to. When she talks about art she just uses buzzwords with very little direction. She also assigns way too much readings, work, which ends up piling on too much work for what should be an interesting GE.
speaks in incoherent sentences and seems to be more passionate about students leaving the lecture hall than the material taught
