Avoid at all costs.
Do not take this instructor! The positive reviews on here are crazy, with two saying "it was an honor" to be in his class; they definitely had me fooled. Tough grader with no constructive feedback, and was always condescending and belittling.
I really enjoyed this class. He's a great prof
class is very discussion-oriented, which is related to the curriculum we're studying. Not difficult if you keep up with work, pretty clear on the criteria, and communicative through class announcements.
This dude can't make up his mind about how he wants to run his class. He has changed the syllabus EVERY SINGLE WEEK since we started to the point where I've been keeping my own document of class updates because of the inconsistency . He's also passive aggressive and provides zero feedback. Nothing is clear and he's remarkably unprofessional
One of the most valuable aspects of the course was how it pushed us to grow both academically and personally. The professor encouraged us to think critically, consider different perspectives, and engage the world with empathy and awareness. It wasn't just about knowledge—it was about becoming more thoughtful and well-rounded.
This teacher/grad student told me to stop asking him questions after class and during class, and to only ask questions during office hours. He then cancelled scheduled office hours. He was unclear about what he wanted from assignments and then got upset when I did not fulfill his expectations.
Not good at teaching.
Most selfless prof I've EVER taken. He goes out of his way to meet up with students with extended office hours to truly help them grow. He said first day of class that he wants US to connect the dots, make up our own analysis, and he wants to hear our thoughts, so it's unfair to say he just simply didn't want to answer a question he was asked.
It was a breath of fresh air from your usual 200-person hall GE, rather a small, seminar-like class. The curriculum is so fascinating. The professor is very accessible out of class. Would highly recommend taking a class with prof Nedjat-Haiem.
Prof Haiem is so knowledgeable and well-read. It is fascinating how he flips the script and teaches Comp Lit through such little-known case studies. He helps you grasp the concepts of the discipline and expands your overall knowledge. He inspires the class to think deeper and corrects students when they make mistakes. Wonderful Professor and class!
This class was so interesting. The professor continuously asks for students' input and gives them a voice. He was amazing. ucsb is missing out on another year of prof haiem teaching
Professor Nedjat Haiem goes into depth on topics that are overlooked and most of the time ignored when these frameworks explain so much about political/social/ historical realities of the world. It was such an honor to have him as a professor. He was always available after class cared about his students and really helping them grow as academics.
It's obvious professor Nedjat-Haiem is so smart and has unique lived experiences about the region we close read on. it was a little intimidating to participate due to the depth of the criteria but prof pushes you out of your comfort zone. I can say that the books we read gave a lot insight about the Middle East's lost history and diversity.
He genuinely cares about students and is very knowledgeable about the topic. class is run more like a graduate seminar so participation and bringing something new to the table is definitely essential.
It's an honor to be taught by prof Nedjat-Haiem. He brings such depth and intellect to every class, and it's clear how much he cares about his students' growth. I've learned so much, not just the subject, but about thinking more critically and seeing the world in new ways. Being in his class has been one of the most meaningful parts of my college.
