MATH111A . 7 Days Ago

Just rewrites exact notes onto the board. Doesn't actually TEACH anything.

I got a D on my last try. This offering by Professor Rodriguez made the material very easy for everyone and even my parents could not believe I got an A-. Take him!

Hated this class. Avoid this prof like the plague. Impossible to understand him. I didn't go to class. Did CLAS instead. Not much homework. Exams are annoying. There is a true false section, but in order to get any of them correct, you have to prove your answer. If you say it is true, but give an incorrect proof, it will be marked incorrect.

There were eight problems in the final; if you got seven correct, you got full credit, and the extra one counted as extra credit. He also changed the grading scale to A+ >95; A >85; A- >80. However, you need to self-teach, to be honest, his lectures were pretty torturous. I hated him until the overall score came out :)

Linear Algebra itself I feel isn't too tough. However, do not underestimate his tests. The grading on them is harsher as well. Lectures can also be hard to follow, self teaching/studying with the textbook and (while not mandatory), going to section is very important for understanding concepts. The curving on grades is very nice in the end.

Worst professor I have ever had. Heavy accent and writes straight from the textbook in lectures. He doesn't teach he is just says what he is writing down and you write 10 pages notes each lecture. Final 50% of grade. Very harsh grader on midterm which was 30%. Such unnecessarily difficult test questions. Had to teach myself everything! AWFUL

Class is very rigorous and for the first time, I really appreciated linear algebra.

Worst math professor at UCSB. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Super harsh grader and tests are impossible. Lectures are basically textbook summary, you will have to self teach. Super thick accent to the point of being basically inaudible, and horrible handwriting so you can't follow notes. Take Labutin instead for 4A. Test heavy, 30% midterm, 50% final.

MATH8 . 10 Months Ago

He spent the entirety of lectures talking at the blackboard and writing full sentences on the board. Super hard to follow. TA did all the homework for me because I didn't understand. Had to curve the class so that a total grade of 39% received a C.

Class is well-organized, though lectures can be sometimes hard to follow. Homework is manageable. No complaints so far!

Math6B . 11 Months Ago

Easily the worst professor I have had at UCSB. He is incapable of giving a proper lecture and the tests are ridiculously hard and seemingly outside the scope of what we should reasonably know.

You will probably have to learn everything on your own since lectures are so poor. They are crazy fast paced without ever looking to the audience to clarify stuff. His accent also makes it difficult to understand.

The TAs and the math department itself had to have a talk with this guy since his teaching standards are so poor / ridiculous. Note that the midterm average was about 30%

This professor does not teach - he just scribbles down the entire textbook each lecture without ever clarifying anything.

Professor Rodrigues writes about 15 pages of notes per lecture with no time to stop and ask questions or get clarity. He seems bothered when you visit office hours, and more so when you don't understand the material. He works entirely front to back out of a textbook. A nice curve, but test averages were 28%.

Expect extremely boring lectures, hard materials, and harsh exams. Only thing he does for lecture is writing down every single word from textbook. I was one of the few students who went to every lecture and witnessed how half of the class just quitted coming to lectures after the midterm. Uncurved midterm avg is 12/50, just in case you wanna know.

Raul I love you but this final was a bit too hard :(

Toooooo hard exams!! midterm average 34%, crazy try to teach many stuff outside regular Math 6b curriculum. Some students say those stuff should be in math 120s. As a result I am feeling bad in both the regular stuff and irregular stuff.

Professor Rodriguez is a super chill professor. It's true that he has some accent, but he teaches very well. The exams are pretty easy. If you work decently hard in the class, it's an easy A.

His teaching style in lectures is so wildly fast that you may find yourself writing 10 pages worth of notes each time, and possibly developing carpal tunnel syndrome. This pace, combined with a strong accent, makes it extremely difficult to get anything useful out of lectures. Also beware of some near impossible tests (do to poor timing).

Very nice professor. Gave us a nice curve on the midterm of 20 points

Even though he has an spanish accent, his lectures are very clear and easy to understand. To give a different perspective on his exams, I think the midterm was fairly reasonable and many of my friends did well too. I can see however how it would be difficult for some.

There are 4 questions in the mid-term, and all of my friends can only solve 1 or 2 of them, but there is no curve. Assignments and quizes have nearly no relation with his exam, and his final counts for 50% of the grade.
