Lectures are not the most helpful and English is not his first language. I learned more from the TA. However, 3B should be easy if you took AP calc in high school.
Lectures are fast and hard to follow. However Becker really knows his stuff and is willing to help always. I personally hardly went to class so not too shocked by my grade but if I actually went and consistently asked for help from him I'm confident I would have gotten an A
professor becker is the GOAT. easily best professor ive had at ucsb. his lectures go really fast so you have to be super focused during lectures but his practice exams and homework is the same as his exams. the homework he gives is usually manageable too and he gives extremely good feedback on them especially on proofs. 10/10 professor.
Second time taking a course with Becker, he is an excellent professor with significant teaching ability. Sad to see him go.
Weird to say but genuinely enjoyed doing his homework. All problems are pretty simple and can be solved with lecture notes. Very caring, and extremely forgiving with grading. He's nice guy, and while lectures can be long, he is very passionate. Definitely worth getting to know him. Solid curve too on exams
Becker's Math 8 is on the harder side compare to other professors. The HW were extremely difficult and I couldn't have done it without his and the TA's Office Hour. Lectures are really fast paced and sometimes hard to understand, but he truly cares about his students. Tests were slightly difficult but I would say it's fair as long as you study.
Great professor, he deserves better score
His teaching style and fast-paced lectures forced me to always pay attention in class which can be tiring, but was ultimately helpful and effective. I think he's a good professor who enjoys the material he is teaching, but I'm sure there are easier professors out there.
Really great professor! Going to lecture and office hours helps a lot. Exams were very fair.
Professor Becker is an awesome guy. It is clear that he really cares about the education of his students and making sure their grades reflect the work they put into the class. His exams were not too easy, but not so hard as to ever require a curve. They were also always timed well. His lectures were very clear and the homework was not too bad.
Becker's 6A was not bad. I learned a lot from his lecture. I think his practice midterm reflects his actual exam, so even though the test is a bit hard it's still doable. The downside of Becker is his handwriting. His handwriting are at times hard to read. Overall I'd a great experience!
I am not sure why Dr. Becker has so many bad reviews. I thought he was pretty good in math 8. It is a difficult class but he made it pretty doable, often asked if we were doing alright with the workload. Tests were difficult but curved.
Lectures can be confusing at times. The two midterms were easier than the homework and he gave extra credit options for both. Partial credit on exams is pretty generous too. Office hours are helpful, and Becker's a very genuine prof, just be prepared to do some self teaching.
If you have taken Calc 2 before, its not too bad, but the language barrier combined with disorganized lectures means you have to do lots of studying outside of class. The homework was very hard, but his tests by comparison were much easier and he even gave extra credit opportunities after both midterms and allowed notecards on both and the final.
his lectures were clear enough for us to keep up with the topics from the textbook. he is so helpful, i went to every OH and he helped out with webwork hw. he took all of our concerns and stressed it again in lectures or sent hints to solve problems. his exams were hard tho and there was weekly quiz in section
I cannot stress enough how terrible a professor he is. You will learn nothing from his lectures and spend tons of time learning instead from youtube videos. His biggest issue is how terrible his lectures are yet how hard the homework is. He gives very basic and preworked examples in class but then gives complex tricky problems on hw. -11/10
Class was overall easy if you've taken calc before. Lectures were not useful at all and honestly hard to understand. He was very caring and accommodating when students spoke up. Weekly quizzes and homework assignments were pretty easy. Midterms were pretty easy and matched up the review guides he gave us. also allowed a notecard for midterms
Seems like a lot of people here have complaints about his lectures. They aren't the worst but there is a very clear language barrier so be wary of that. The grading is really clear and he rewards a lot of partial and extra credit for the exams. He is a really nice person and always tries to keep us in touch and responds to emails consistently.
I took AP calc in high school, so it wasn't too awful, but that's because I already knew most of the stuff. I did have to to teach myself a lot of the concepts. He was very nice and understanding, and he did allow 1 note card for the midterms and 2 for the final. Luckily our final was optional, but I did try it and it was difficult. The HW was easy
I didn't take calc in high school so Becker was very hard to understand. I spent hours in CLAS/MathLab just for the tutors to tell me they couldn't help me on certain homework problems because they were too difficult. Made mistakes on exam study guide answer keys. Very flexible with homework but I had to basically teach myself the entire course.
Coming from a competitive public high school, Prof Becker's 3B class was pretty lightweight in comparison to high school calculus. The exams are difficult and require a good amount of studying, but he gives extremely helpful review guides -- I exclusively used them to study and got A's on both midterms. Marc is understanding, kind, and funny too!
He was caring towards my MATH 3B class by giving us helpful extensions on assignments when he saw us struggling. Unfortunately, I always felt frustrated and learned little from him even though I attended lectures and completed all my homework, and studied. Exams were HARD. He had good intentions, but I think he was just not ready to teach 3B.
Becker is bad at explaining concepts and mostly relies on example problems to teach. The homework load is reasonable for a STEM pre-req and tests are graded very generously. For my class, the final was even changed to no-fault so most people didn't even take it.
Lectures were confusing and hard to follow. He stops his sentences in the middle of his thoughts and tries his best with the language barrier but sometimes tests are hard to read and comprehend. He also often gets his own problems wrong, which left me learning many concepts on my own. But, he is caring and wants the best for his students.
