He's very nice and cares about the success of his students. Gives great help during office hours. Moves fast during lectures.
Final is optional. Midterms were really hard and you have to study a lot for them. Quizzes were pretty easy and homework was hard but he would help you if u asked.
Great as a person, bad as a teacher. He lets you use notecards during tests but he cannot teach to save his life. Use CLAS, watch OChem tutor, and math prof youtubers to understand topics.
The language barrier is not as bad as people have made it seem on this site. The lectures aren't great but not bad, he also uploads the notes he takes during the class. This class is not supposed to be easy so don't expect an A if math isn't your strong.
he is a really nice person and tries his best with the language barrier but the work is much harder than what's covered in lecture, though he is willing to give extensions and extra credit if needed. quizzes are ok and graded pretty nicely, but he def misled students on the difficulty of the second midterm :/ overall great guy but not a great prof
Professor Becker is a caring and understanding person, but his tests are spawns of devils. I have never seen such difficult tests for such straightforward concepts. Even if you consider yourself good at math I would not take this professor for any math class at UCSB.
very very sweet man, but I've never struggled so much with math before. his teaching style is pretty difficult and he teaches like we already know what he's talking about. boi
i really enjoyed his lectures and being able to understand everything he was saying. tests are very well paced and reasonable and he stays true to his word
With a clear language barrier it may be hard to understand what is being taught. Minor errors once in a while. If you had a hard time in Calc 1 this might be for you as he takes it much slower than other classes, lots of review. Don't get discouraged by tests and quizzes as grades are adjusted if average is low enough. Good TA's while we had them.
Becker is genuinely the worst teacher I have ever had. The lectures that he gives are confusing and often have nothing to do with the homework, quizzes, or tests, all of which were poorly designed. He often got his own problems wrong. We spent an unnecessary amount of time reviewing old topics. The only time I was able to learn was through the TA.
he is very chill and very nice. bro is trying his best but its his first year from france and he has somewhat of a language and teaching gap - he frequently gets his own problems wrong, will explicitly tell us things arent on the test then put them on the test, or say that examples from his own notes are too hard for the class.
The worst teacher/professor I've ever had, comes from France so his English is choppy. So many instances where he promises something to be true for a quiz/test/homework and just does the opposite of what he promised, screwing his students over.
He assigns tons of HW, which is insane. I don't want to see him ever again
This professor is so hard to learn from. He has an accent that restricts him from forming proper sentences which makes it really hard to understand what he's trying to say/teach. He also gets his own problems wrong sometimes and explains things really badly. He makes his homework/tests much harder than what he teaches.
He is a nice man and loves math, but he does not know to teach. He lectures like you already know the material, he makes lots of mistakes during his lectures, and what he actually goes over in class is the basics of certain formulas. The homework, quizzes, and tests given are 10x harder and complex and hard to do with the examples given in class.
He clearly loves math and teaching, and seems like a nice person, but his tests are difficult, his practice tests/weekly quizzes/homework do not prepare you for the tests, and he generally seems to want students to have a deep conceptual understanding of all the material that is practically beyond the scope of his class. Avoid this class.
He is a very thoughtful and conscientious professor! We received the notes he wrote in every lecture, which helped me a lot with my revision.
This man does not know how to teach. He quizzes you on material he goes over the following week. He will teach you a simple concept and test you on much harder material he doesn't dare touch. His lectures are unintelligible, his section quizzes are a mess, his notes don't show his work so you couldn't study off his notes even if you wanted! AVOID!
