Lectures are clear, grading policy is generous, exams are reasonable. You couldn't ask for a more straightforward and fair professor.
Very good lecturer, I honestly did not need to put much time outside of the class to understand what was going on in class due to his lectures. Only negative thing is his quizzes he gave, but he had a very solid policy on it. Sometimes he would include stuff on his quizzes that we haven't covered.
I've taken Math 4A,6A so far and Math 4B w/ Prof Tian was the easiest. The practice midterm and final are similar to the real thing and Professor Tian is a great lecturer. My one only complaint is that he would sometimes forget to post the empty lecture notes before class and sometimes the homework could be a lot. There are quizzes in section.
The GOAT. Clear lectures and exams consistent w practice exams
Just a standard, pretty good professor. Not really much to say tbh; he won't amaze you, but he's solid. Exams are fair and very similar to the practice. No curve I'm pretty sure. Unlimited attempts on HW; 2 HWs per week. Only 1 midterm. Weekly quizzes which were mostly stupid.
His lectures were quite good. Be prepared to do a LOT of webwork. Midterm is super easy and rrly similar to the practice midterm he posts, but the final was quite difficult, however it was curved pretty heavily. Most TAs will cover whats on the quizzes in section right before you take them so don't sweat them, they're pretty easy.
One of the better math professors here. Lectures were good but sometimes doesn't explain things super well. Webworks twice a week are definitely harder than exams and quizzes which is annoying for homework, but nice preparation for exams. Midterm was super easy, final was hard but they seemingly curved it a lot or just graded it really favorably.
Gives a decent amount of webwork (2 per week). The midterm was pretty easy and fair given that it was similar to the review. However, with the final exam we were given a review of the same caliber with an final including problems much harder than the homework or review. Felt like it threw off a lot of students and the review should've been better.
Pretty straightforward class. Never went to lectures and still did fine. Section participation matters for there was a weekly quiz along with weekly webwork homeworks. The webwork homework was much more difficult than any of the quizzes or exams were. Exams were pulled exactly from the practice tests so they weren't too difficult.
Great professor, made a handful of jokes during lecture that were delivered as if he was a stand up comedian greatly increasing the quality of the jokes. Lectures were straightforward and it was clear what was expected of us on midterms and quizzes. Webwork went way more in depth and was a bit difficult but not necessary for midterms/quizzes.
Had him for 3B, super easy as his tests pulled problems from the practice tests. Didn't got to lectures and only went to section because of quizzes. TA will go over questions that will be on the quiz right before you take the quiz. Webwork was challenging at times. I did have prior knowledge as I got a 5 on Calc AB & BC and took this class for fun.
He went on tangents in class which was a bit frustrating, but he posts notes online. Practice tests were similar to the actual tests. Had Webwork often.
Overall, one of the worst teachers/professors I've had in all my years of education. DO NOT TAKE! Adds little to no context/explanation in lectures, and is almost offended when you ask questions. Only has one midterm (which is extremely difficult). Makes tests way harder than the material he is teaching.
LOTS of homework that's materials are not covered through lecture, more so from self reading of the textbook. There's a quiz every week in section that isn't long, but makes up a good part of your grade. The midterm/final isn't too bad since there is a study guide provided. Overall be prepared to study a lot.
Professor Tian is AMAZING! He teaches very clearly, he does send homework almost every week but it's all manageable and easy. He truly knows how to teach math and the exams are just like the review that he gives.
Very chill professor who teaches the material very well. Lecture slides were clear to understand. There's quizzes every week except for weeks 1&10 to make sure you're engaged with the material. Exams were fair, make sure to take advantage of the midterm/final practices before the exam since they're very similar, which helped me do well on the exam.
Professor Tian gives a lot of homework, and I did not feel like he prepared us well for it. The practice problems in class were very simple compared to homework. I felt like I learned a lot more from the TA than his class. The final also was incredibly difficult. That being said, he's perfectly nice, funny, and is incredibly smart.
He gives much more homework comparing to other lower division math classes. His lectures are abstract, but his tests are not too bad. If you would like to spend extra time, you will be fine.
As a Chinese student, I liked Wenchuan's lecture style. He spent a lot of time on hardcore concepts and less time than other profs on examples. This made lectures super efficient. He gave fair exams, super similar with the practice ones. The only thing I would complain is that he typed in wrong grades on GOLD, which was scary.
He did pop quizzes every week, but those are not super hard if you pay attention in class and do the practice TA sent out each week. Midterm was pretty much a replica of the practice midterm. Math 6B gets pretty difficult towards the end of the course, and Prof. Tian put out a pretty difficult final, but he did give very generous curve.
tian was one of the best profs i've had at ucsb! i had him for MATH6A in winter 2022. his lectures were incredibly straightforward with lots of examples. he was always very clear about what we were expected to know, and all exam prep materials were nearly identical in format and content to the actual exams.
Took 6A with Prof. Tian in winter, and I am taking 6B with him right now. He is a super fun guy, and he posts lecture notes with detailed definitions, formulas and examples every time. There were practice midterms/finals, and if you work hard in the class, it is an easy A.
Wenchuan can explain the concepts quite clearly in his lectures, but reading the textbook still helps a lot. His hw is indeed difficult (and in large quantity), but the quizzes and exams are fair. Get ready to work on a 10-problem set after each lecture.
3 homework a week but help understanding concepts. Leave a whole week before the final for reviewing and two practice exams although the final is a little difficult. Very easy Midterm and quizzes.
