Amazing professor, always be patient and good at helping students. Lecture note is clear and well-organized.
Brightbill is the best prof I've had in the math department. The way his class is set up really forces you to learn the concepts and material. HW is a lot but fair and you can do corrections for full points. Office hours are super valuable. Try to go to every lecture, he covers a lot. His class is hard but if you want to learn, he's your guy
Brightbill is very accessible outside of class and provides materials needed to succeed. While lectures are essential to attend in order for learning material, they are not mandatory, and most of the material still needs to be self-taught in order to truly understand it. The only way to learn the material is repetition, so get ready to work.
Hard class, good professor. Reading the book will help reinforce the material. Brightbill knows learning this new material is difficult. He will stay in office hours answering any questions til the cows come home, so going will help you understand the material.
Uses piazza for homework questions which honestly helps so much and definitely ask question if you are even a little bit confused because the class is so fast paced that it will all build up and you will be very behind if you don't. Easy to get a B but hard to get an A in the class. There is a ton !!! of homework but it does prepare you very well
Easily the best math professor I've had at UCSB. The material is fairly challenging but his teaching is so good that it makes up for it. He used his own "textbook" for 108A which consisted of his notes and it was way better than any other textbook I could have used. I highly recommend taking a course with him if you can.
This guy is a G best math professor I have had at this school
One of the best professors I've ever had! He is super passionate and helpful outside of class and creates his own "textbook" which is so much easier to follow than most math textbooks.
Professor Brightbill clearly has a passion for teaching and is very set on making sure that anyone who passes his class is ready for upper division math. He does give a lot of homework and will show no mercy when grading. That being said he is very kind and helpful so go to his office hours, ask a bunch of questions and you'll do great!
really good professor if you really want to learn something about mathematical thinking and proof.
I learned a lot from his class. I was nervous about my poor 4A before I came to his class. He is so patient, nice, and gives so clear explanation although I sometimes ask bad questions. It is really easy to understand his lecture as long as you pay attention. He holds so long OH until he answers all the questions. He is the BEST professor!
Amazing professor? Yes. Brutal? Yes. The class was very challenging and had lots of homework but ultimately was so well taught that I learned a TON. If you're ready to put in the effort you will get a lot out of this class and be very well prepared for future classes. A great professor. I will try to take more classes with him!
Best ever! Lectures were unbelievably clear. Materials were very sufficient, and the exams were very similar with practice exams given.
He is a good guy, but never never takes his course. too fast and always let us prove the proposition and don't teach more about the definition. Honestly he is maybe the best guy I have met in university but his course is the worst.
Soooooo Hard!!!!!! Things begin to be out of control around the mid-quarter. You may still not understand what he is saying even though you try hard coz the material is more and more abstract and there are tons of things for you to remember. Telling you prop/def/theorems faster and faster to catch up the schedule. Why so hard..........
Honestly, I don't know why he has so many 5 stars. This class in person is much harder than online, since he goes over materials super fast. In a 50min lecture, there's barely time for you to breathe. And there are no answer sheets to the homework, which makes them harder. The professor seems nice but I wish he could slow down a little bit more.
Brightbill is truly an amazing professor. Math 8 is a very difficult class but Brightbill does a great job teaching you, being kind and available during OH. Leslie is an amazing TA as well
3.5/5. Jeremy Brightbill is probably one of the best (teaching ability) professors, HOWEVER, avoid his 108A and pick Yitang Zhang's as you can. His grading scale is very rigorous, largely based on exams, which have no curve. If you pay attention to his class, you will learn a lot, but maybe eventually get a B or even C.
He is a really nice, patient, and caring professor. He could stay in OH for extra hours until he answers all questions from students, and his lecture is clear. I do learn a lot from his class. However, his homework really takes me around 10 hours to finish. OH is absolutely necessary. Be prepared to work.
This man is a genius and he seems to know everything! He doesnt want everyone to get an A so both the hw and exam are pretty hard (precisely, from the middle of the course). Sometimes you have no clue, but please do the reading, go to the class & oh and he will show you everything you want to know! Hope you guys enjoy his teaching and good luck!
Professor Brightbill is such a knowledgable and kind guy. This class is definitely hard but he knows his stuff. It's definitely important to put in your own work and read the textbook. The homework is very difficult but super relevant to the exams and is worth completing. Wouldn't take the class again cuz it was hard but Brightbill is a solid prof
Brightbill really cares about students. In lectures, he explains things well which is rare in the math department. Overall very happy with him as a professor. The course was challenging and the homework took a lot of time, but it was good practice for the exams and very useful since it's an intro to proof writing.
Prof Brightbill is very knowledgeable about mathematics. However, he makes it difficult to understand in lectures. He would run out of time and not explain things in depth. HW took me 8 hours spread out over the week. He still has hw on midterm exam days.
Brightbill might be the best professor I've had in UCSB. This man dedicates a lot of his time into teaching, and will extend office hours to accommodate students. I had a tough time but I learned so much more than I would from another professor. Homework took around 15 hours a week and he grades quite harshly. But as long as you try, you will pass.
