MATH145 . 3 Years Ago

extremely harsh grader, considers any materials outside of the confusing textbook and his dense lectures to be cheating. Assigns problems that one would expect to see in a graduate level course and gives little partial credit. Exams include topics we have never covered in class. I would rather take an extra quarter than take one of his courses

There's a reason no one came to his office hours. It shows how much this professor cares about his students; to be able to send an email in an attempt to discourage us for not coming to office hours that won't be worth a students time due the professors lack of character and professionalism during a mentally stressful time for students. Listen UCSB

My entire understanding of discrete math is thanks to the TA hard carrying us. Not a single person attended office hours (an email was sent out literally saying this), and the lectures were incredibly long and difficult to follow. Curved slightly at the end (after nobody got credit on a problem on the final), but the stress was NOT worth it.

His weekly lectures are almost four times longer than other professors, homework are literally impossible to get full credits on, and tests are graded so hard he would take off your points because you didn't write the word "if" pretty enough. On one problem in the final, nobody in the class received any credits, and he doesn't curve. Don't take him

Just don't take his class. I hate myself and math

My experience in fall with this professor was the worst in my academic career. As a math major, I was always motivated to work and learn. But after taking his course, I can say that this professors teaching is literal dogwater. Neglects students and their personal problems during the pandemic. If tenure was a thing for him, Id pay him to depart.

I cant agree more with other comments. I got A but would still suggest you avoid his classes to make life easier.

MATH119A . 4 Years Ago

If you get Mr. Avetisyan for Math119A, just drop! He never curves even though the average is very low. There are six problems in the final and the last three are EXTREMELY HARD! He also gives very mean comments and sarcasm on gradescope, which make you lose confidence in math. Ive never met a professor as mean as him.

MATH117 . 4 Years Ago

I have taken his 6B and 117. All his exams are difficult. When I was in the 6B, he only gave us the PDF instead of videos. He recorded videos while teaching 117. Although his average score on the exam was very low, he said he would not curve. There is a lot of sarcasin his email. This is a very mean behavior for students. Don't choose his class!

Worst professor ever, will never curve the class even after he said that the midterm average is really low. He includes so many sarcasm in his email and is very mean to his own students. Avoid him at any cost, do not ever take his classes.

MATH6B . 4 Years Ago

He is literally so bad. Can you believe he includes so many sarcasm to students in gradescope feedback and emails? He enjoys including weird and never-taught problems in the exams, and even our Ph.D. TA had no idea how to do the extra credit one for midterm. Even worse, he never curves, even if his average is the lowest one in all math classes.

This guy is VERY tough! Rating him a 2 is not because he doesn't care, he just is not the best at explaining, which was crucial in this theoretical math class. His grading is extremely harsh and picky, and lectures did not include many examples. Grade is homework, midterm, and final. EC is offered which is nice. Nice guy, but stay away.

Just No, I got A on 4A, A on 4B, A on 6B but b-on his damn 6A.

Professor's lectures are very disorganized, hard to follow, and he expects all his students to have a natural intuition for calculus, which not everyone has. Homework did not correlate with the exams, although the practice questions are like the real thing. I would advise not to take his class if you can avoid it. He's better off doing research.

MATH8 . 4 Years Ago

Probably the most passionate professor I have ever had at UCSB. He emphasizes rigor and tries to make his homework pretty difficult sometimes. Dishes out some sass at times, but generally helpful.

His class was hard, but if you keep up with the readings, you should be able to do well on the tests and homework. Super responsive to emails about the hw and problems.

if you've signed up for his class next quarter or are thinking about it, DONT. Lectures are pointless because you dont learn anything and the book problems dont help at all. He does not provide any useful information at all, and seems like his only mission is to fail his students which is super discouraging. Do whatever you can to not get as a prof

MATH3A . 4 Years Ago

worst math professor at ucsb, the material on the tests having nothing to do with the book problems or his lectures. he really emphasizes going to office hours but his office hours are pointless because when you ask him a question his response is you should already know this, he is not in communication with tas so they dont know how to prep us

MATH3A . 4 Years Ago

By far the worst professor. He knows the course material, but fails to teach it in a manner that is comprehensible to the class. Gets easily offended and can be rude to students who simply disagree with him. Hardly anybody bothers showing up to lectures because you simply don't learn much there. CLAS and section are a necessity. Avoid at all costs!

MATH3A . 4 Years Ago

He has unorthodox and overly-complicated approaches to many of the subjects and I have yet to meet a professor less enthusiastic than Mr. Avetisyan. He started off the quarter by suggesting that we should not ask why we are being taught certain things, just learn them, and that he did not suggest that we take the class, so our issues are not his.

MATH119A . 4 Years Ago

Not the best lecturer but good professor. Lectures can be hard to follow but they coincide with the textbook. Homework is tedious and a little repetitive but not very long or difficult. Exams reflect the material from the homework. He offers a nice curve and A TON of extra credit. He wants the best for his students, which is all you can ask for.

Great professor whos full of crude-humor. Tough class but lectures help to supplement Perkos textbook. Very interesting subject overall.

Amazing professor! Very nice and respected person. Take advantage of office hours and absolutely must read the textbook. Attend every lecture because it is very easy to fall behind. Don't procrastinate and prepare for tests early. Overall amazing professor. Very down to earth and real which is a great change of pace which makes him an absolute gem.

Mid term was exactly like the practice test. Final was stuff I only saw under the word problems in textbook with one question seen in HW. Biggest gripe was leaving essential lessons for 6A at the end of the quarter, forcing me to self learn double and triple integrals the last week. Attend CLAS! Read and do as many textbook problems as possible!
