I took this class in Spring of 2021. TA's are very nice and are willing to give you extensions, but the Professor is so hard to understand. She took mid-way surveys and knew that her teaching wasn't working but she didn't listen or change from her feedback. It's unfortunate that this was my first interaction with LAIS at UCSB as a Spanish major.
Her lectures are poorly organized but the material is relatively easy and completely doable. There are three essays throughout the quarter and they all have the same prompt so it's pretty easy to figure out how to write the essay. Personally, I did not like this class because the disorganization was too much but it's not particularly challenging.
This class adapted the best to online mode. Yes, there's a lot of reading, but even if you just skim to get the general ideas, you'll do well. The lectures sorta long, but the group work is easy. Overall, They are so incredibly flexible and understanding during all this, and seem to want you to succeed. Especially the TAs. Truly homies.
Her lectures were boring and hard to follow. We had group work every week with the same people, meaning if you fall into the role of doing everything, you're stuck forever. Also, she was very confusing with links and what would happen during class. All around would not take again.
The lectures are bad, the essay prompts make no sense, theres too much reading, the professor has no sympathy for the students needs under COVID, this class is unnecessarily hard and soul crushing. Dont take it, you will regret it. And Im sugarcoating things so this post doesnt get taken down.
i took this class in the fall and i got bored during every. single. lecture. she just shows a powerpoint with a picture on it then reads off a piece of paper. tests include multiple long essays, and the 3 essays due throughout the quarter are worse.
I'm taking another class for the same credit and this class is 3 times the work load. Her exams are long and all her essay prompts are the same. The entire class brought up concerns about the first exam being long and vague, so she made the second exam longer and harder (took me 8 hours). She is unreasonable and does not listen to student feedback.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. This class is not an easy GE. Ridiculous amount of reading. 3 papers that have the all are the same prompt and equally terrible. Must go to lecture to be prepared for exams. Subject matter is actually interesting but the papers and overload of material to learn make it unenjoyable and overall wayyyy to difficult.
Just no. If youre hoping to take this for an easy GE you are out of luck. It seems like her and the TAs make it their goal to make this class more difficult than it should be. This class has ruined my life and has a ridiculous workload. I do not recommend this (taken online)
Very lecture heavy but does not put anything on lecture slides besides pictures. Very hard for non-auditory learners to learn since she verbally lectures all information. Requires a lot of memorization of a lot of terms. No clear focus as to what the class is meant to be about. Does not show up for office hours and does not respond to emails.
I took LAIS 10 with her and it was quite easy but there's way too much info and readings. She's not super organized in lectures and there is no power points or anything. Just her words and if you want something extra, section can help.
She just talks and talks for an hour with no words on her slides to indicate the topic shes on. Just has some pictures that she wont share on GS Bc its her intellectual property. Okay, but its your job to share that w us and theyre pictures you googled. Disorganized and doesnt mention what she wants us to recognize study or remember. Dont.
reads off of her notes but does not put anything on her lecture slides.
Professor Engel is a great teacher, as long as you go to class. Most of the content on the midterm and final is spoken during lecture. The exams aren't too hard, but take good notes. There were large amounts of reading for section, but most of it was interesting so it was manageable. I learned a lot.
Emily taught this class as if it was art history--we had to memorize tons and tons of artists, dates, artwork, and quotes. She provides study guides but they are HUGE and unorganized considering there are only 20 multiple choice questions on the midterm/final and the rest is writing. Writing prompts are confusing, annoying, and pointless. Don't.
Great lectures by Professor Engel. A very intelligent and interesting perspective on the topic she teaches. The class has been incredibly easy. I do agree that there were few assignments, and her slides only gave key terms, but she always verbally explained them and allowed us to interpret them. Made me consider classes in other departments.
Awful lectures. Little to no content on lectre slides and she just spews endless information verbally for an hour without indicating what is important or not. Would NOT recommend LAIS 10 OR this professor. Ever.
