Professor Barrett's PHIL 124 was honestly one of those classes I would go out of my way to make sure I wouldn't miss because I was so invested in Thomas' lectures. Not only does he make the material extremely fascinating and easily digestible for students, he is also HILARIOUS. The funny stories he'd tell us in class would genuinely make my day.
Best person ever
Good class if you are looking for an Easy GE or an A. Super willing to work with students and makes expectations very clear. Overall great class and great professor
Super interesting lecture. Gives a lot of extra credit, and attendance also counts as extra credit. Highly recommend Phil3, it's super fun and easy A.
Professor Barrett is one of the best professors I've had at UCSB. He is very engaging and genuinely invested in how his students do. Attendance is not mandatory and is extra credit. All problems on the midterm and final are taken directly from the study guide. One of the best GE classes at ucsb, I cannot recommend professor Barrett's class enough!
I LOVE PROFESSOR BARRETT. He has really made me consider double majoring in Phil 3. My TA Tiffani, was absolutely amazing! Professor Barrett was so thorough with lectures and provided much assistance outside of class. All tests are from study guide with much support while studying. PLEASE CONSIDER TAKING THIS CLASS
I took 100F this past fall '23 qtr and it was great! Thomas is my favorite professor at ucsb fs. Attendance wasn't mandatory but it was offered as extra credit at the end of the quarter. The grade was based on 3 "medium" papers, 2 "short" papers, and the extra credit attendance quizzes.
I took this class as a GE but really enjoyed the material due to how Barrett would conduct the class. The homework is very manageable, only taking around 30 minutes a week, and the grading is very generous. Barrett is an amazing professor who genuinely cares for his students. He is easily one of the best professors I've had at UCSB.
This class felt like a lie because it was such an easy chill class. As long as you go to lectures you don't really need the textbook. Attendance is mandatory and graded. Homework every week, but each only took me about 30 minutes to do. Thomas really cares about his students, as do the TAs! (and his dog is super cute on top of that).
Professor Barrett is an extremely kind and funny teacher. He is very accessible and helpful. These concepts are difficult to grasp, but he moves at a fair pace and holds office hours frequently. This course was really useful and teaches you how to think logically. 2 midterms, 1 final, weekly homework worksheets, attendance for lecture and section.
Professor Barrett Is a really nice guy. I took this class to fulfill a GE, however I didn't expect logic to be a discrete type of math, I heard someone also compare our homework to concepts found in a computer science class. So because I am terrible with math this class has been challenging for me, I do kind of wish I would've taken philosophy 4.
COMPUTER SCIENCE STUDENTS- TAKE THIS COURSE BEFORE CS40!!!! I took this course just to satisfy a GE but to my complete surprise SO much of the material in this course was used in computational theory, since Phil 3 is a lot of logic and symbol-ing. I never would've expected it. Barrett is really nice, reasonable, manageable workload, great for a GE.
His class was very straightfoward with homework due every week and two midterms and one final. All of them were pretty easy with a few challenging problems but he was always available during office hours to discuss it. Only study guides problems on midterms and finals.
Thomas is such a great guy! I took his 100F class in Fall 2022 and I LOVED it, made me look forward to morning classes even when I was not a morning person. Thomas really does care for his students and is very easy to talk to! Class material was very easy to understand with him around!
It was really great taking this class with Professor Barrett. PHIL3 has surely made me winter quarter! Professor Barrett gives very inspirational and organized lectures, and he is a super kind person and is easily accessible. He has made me interested in philosophy and logic, and inspired me to link the logic stuff with my research. He is the GOAT!
Thomas was one of the reasons why I switched to philosophy!! He is an awesome professor and very caring for his students. Office hours tend to be very helpful and fun. Tests were not extremely difficult but will be challenging if you don't practice enough, practice is very important!!! overall, great professor
professor barrett is awesome! he really makes the class engaging. i'm not a phil major, however i felt that the class was pretty easy/understandable for a GE. barrett is very caring and accessible with his students and i highly recommend him! for my class (phil 3) we had weekly homework, 2 midterms, and a final. attendance was extra credit!
goated
As a STEM major, I found the first 2/3 of the class esoteric af & impractical. However, after living in OHs & asking for the core ideas to be explained like I'm five years old, I got a lot out of 100F! Overall: Did 1/10 readings, cried a little, religiously went to OHs (Thomas is wonderful), and wrote some of the best papers of my life
A perfect professor! As a freshman, I just felt a little bit uncertain about my college academics especially considering the fact that I have never taken any PHIL classes before. But his detailed and patented interpretation really made the hard stuff easy and fascinating. He's also quite accessible outside class. Everything are just perfect!
I was always excited to go to class knowing that Thomas would have a funny anecdote or two ready for the class. The reading was very manageable, and the lectures engaging. He truly seems to care about his students and their learning. He asks for students to think for their essays, but ensures everyone has the proper foundation for them to thrive.
Thomas is my favorite professor at UCSB. He grades papers toughly (a primary component of your grade) but his lectures are the best, bar none. In a university of boring and unrelatable lecturers his exuberance and down-to-earthness are heaven sent.
Tells very juicy stories about ancient philosophers. Super cool guy, very interesting lectures and topics, well organized slides, absolutely cannot go wrong.
I mean, he's not a bad guy, but he's super corny. He'll tell the driest stories about some ancient philosopher or about his personal life when literally no one asked. Lectures drag on for hours and the material is unbearable to study.
