He really knows Western Civs and gets you interested too. He isnt hard core about dates, just general knowledge of the time period and primary sources. Tests are fairly easy. He likes to bring humor into all of his lectures and is good at it. DEFINITELY recommended for GE or major classes!!!!!!!!
Great class. Never taught the straight facts/dates, and kept it interesting all the time. Really funny guy as well. Midterms are fairly easy, just have a general knowledge of what the books he assigns are about. Definitely recommended for both history majors and those looking for a GE.
Hasegawa is great! He really gets into it and gives a lot of interesting information. Lectures are hard to follow unless you print out the slides before because he goes through the slides quickly so its hard to write it all down. He gives a quiz in every lecture and section is worth 25% of the grade so make sure you go to class and section.
Class is good but the TA will make or break it for you.
Hasegawa is the man. He makes history so interesting and lays out events in great order so you undrstand everything. He also discusses the interesting things that happened in the past and just puts great enthusiasm and emphasis into his teaching. He is not that hard. Just go to class...you can do well on test mostly from class lectures and some
He really knows his stuff and is very interested in engaging his audience at his lectures to challenge his thoughts. His lectures are often funny as Prof. Hasegawa throws in humor every now and the. His assignments are fair but demanding. Only serious students take his class!!!
awesome class, awesome professor. you have to be willing to work hard to get a good grade, but its very interesting.
A little hard to understand at first, but his accent is easy to get used to. He is incredibly passionate about the subject and teaching. If you do some of the reading and/or attend class regularly it'll be easy
His lectures are enjoyable, even though he uses (ugh) PowerPoint. Enough said.
I LOVE Hasegawa!! At first I thought that he was going to be a stern old man, but after each lecture, he'd make an effort to at least say hi and give a warm smile. During one of our sections, he came in for a surprise visit, and really listened to what the students had to say. My TA, however, was a total jerk (loud, obnoxious).
H. is a cool guy, but i did not get much out of lectures (and i attend all of them, bec. of the damn quizzes). Section was my life saver, it will be for you too if you're not the kind of person who worship the textbook. Anyways, H. is a cool guy bec. he gave us a curve when the midterm's average was 72%. I feel like he really does work with us

25% discussion, 5% lecture, 5% first paper, 10% 2nd ppr, 25% final paper, 15% midterm, 15% final. No curve. All his lectures are powerpoint and posted online. As long as you review lecture powerpoints, read perspectives, and go to discussion this class is easy. Hasegawa makes the material interesting & focuses on concepts, not memorizing dates.
his accent will scare u at first but he's actually not hard to understand. he intentionally speaks slowly so that he can be understood which makes him easy to take notes off of. the tests were straightforward, the papers were more challenging but overall its a good class.
Hasegawa was an excellent teacher. He is very passionate about history and very knowledge. The readings were a bit much, and the paper format was extremely weird, but Hasegawa was very funny and his lectures were very informative. Good class, overall.
Hasegawa was one of the best professors I've had at UCSB. He was knowledgable, hilarious and engaging with a real passion for the subject. He always tried to get everybody interested. The readings were a bit much but I would reccomend taking this class just to be taught by this lovely man.
There was a lot of work. However, the good thing is that your grade is dispersed over a bunch of assignments so its not that hard to get an A. He makes lectures mandatory by giving a "quiz" that you have to turn in at the end of lecture. I'm a history major and I enjoyed this class, however I wouldn't reccomned it just for GE credit
It was an interesting class, but there is A LOT of readings. Some weeks we would have 1-2 textbook chapters, 8 essays from the "reader," and a novel with a paper coming up soon. The paper format was weird (2 small papers that are later combined into one 8pgr) It was an interesting class but lectures could be boring and the "quizzes" were annoying.
Overall a good teacher. The accent makes it sometimes a bit hard to keep your attention on but lecture is good. Attendence required in lectures with "quizzes" that are just a question that you answer from lecture and turn into TAs. When it came to WWII, he presents it from the Japanese side. Otherwise, he's good and I would recommend.
There is too much work for a GE, the readings are cool but not the format of the paper 8 pages written as 3 portions, and secondly choose ur TA wisely my was horrible being biased on his teaching, while encouraging you to be more open-minded yet himself not open-minded to students who are proamerican, prodemocracy and procapitalist.
Clearly this guy knows his lectures are bad and he has figured out a way to force people to show up to class: daily quizzes. His thick Japanese accent makes understanding history impossible and the class barely touches base on what history is about: one lecture on WWII is ridiculous. Section is highly demanding and so is the class for a GE Avoid it
Great teacher knows what he's teaching and how to teach but gives way too much work for a GE course, combined with a tough TA not a good combo, however if u prefer more work and would result in better grades, the grades are dispersed by exams, attendence, papers, quizzes, ur choice.
Worst class I have ever taken here. Very hard to understand b/c of accent. TAKES ROLL IN CAMPBELL HALL everyday for lecture!!! Enormous amount of work for a lower division class. Section is worth the most in the class(25%). Do not take this class unless you absolutely have to.
If you pay close enough attention, he is actually funny. The class itself though was pretty tough especially with the vague writing topics.
