Professor Duffy is a really sweet guy and an interesting lecturer. The grading for the class was pretty random as there was 20% devoted to participation although there were no sections. Also, he gave very little time on the midterm so make sure you can be a speedy test taker! Otherwise, pretty enjoyable!!
He's just so cute and delightful! He's totally understanding and easygoing, and loves picking on people in lecture - but he's so sweet about it and laughs and makes everyone else laugh and he's just such a good guy! I hope he reads this and knows how loved he is by UCSB students.
I had a great quarter with Professor Duffy! He is always in a great mood, and is very knowledgeable! In order to do well in the course, you must go to class. The novels chosen for this course were very fun :-) Highly recommended professor!
I love Prof. Duffy! He is so funny and makes going to class worthwhile. He is extremely fair and helpful. Take any class he is offering and you will enjoy it (and I don't say that about just anyone)!
Professor Duffy is unbelievably helpful and his tests are extremely fair and not bad at all as long as you pay attention in class
The tests are all about the IDs, know the author, title, date, relevance and you will do fine. Just remember what he focused on in lecture. The workload was not overly demanding, midterm, final and 8 page paper. He LOVES the unintelligible Ulysses, so expect to dive into that tome. Good lecturer, approachable, willing to help...unusual for a Prof..
He was my favorite professor in the last 2 years, I would take any class he teaches even if it isn't in my major. absolutely the most fun I have had in class in a long time.
Others have this guy pegged. Awesome lecturer, makes what could be dry interesting, his passion for lit stirs yours. Tests straightforward, but you have to memorize a lot of work. Paper easy and open to your interpretation. Not an English major and I wasn't overwhelmed or bored. Definitely recommended. Meg Fernandes was a great TA, but maybe gone.
I really liked duffy. I know this is a weird analogy, but if he was a professional athlete, he'd be a definite cult hero. That's honestly the best way to describe him. Tests were straightforward, JUST KNOW THE POEMS EXTREMELY WELL. The essay has very few guidelines, so go wild. Definitely recommend this class.
I like to think of him as a delightful little leprechaun. He's kooky, but brilliant. He makes you appreciate the poetry, really. Best part is the tests and reading are fair. The notes will be random because he does kind of throw out a lot of information.
He was teaching this class as a substitute so maybe that's his excuse, but he seems to just ramble on about incoherent thoughts that have little relation to the class. Tests are fair, but the essay has almost no guidelines.
Duffy was my favorite professor thus far. He truly loves the material he teaches, and if you are willing, you will grow to love it too. I loved this class, the lectures were fantastic and he doesn't move too fast. Take this class!!!
I know it was summer session, but he really fell behind. Obviously accustomed to lectures and I'd have preferred more discussion. We didn't know what the final was going to be (all essay or all IDs) until the week of. Be prepared to cram and pay attention to what passages he focuses on in class.
Love, love, love Duffy! What a wonderful Professor, he listens to all his students, inspires students to think and express themselves. Take advantage of the 12 lines! Remember that the ID's are worth the most on the Midterm and Final, not the essays. Def. worth every moment. Take it for a great college lecture experiance.
Sweet man!! I enjoyed lectures, even without ever reading the little he assigned. GOING TO CLASS IS IMPORTANT, though occasionally tedious. Tests are heavy on IDs, and IDs are cake if you go to class. (taking notes recommended!) Beware, section participation is 20%. But I never participated... (?) I just did the assignments. I got an unexpected A.
GOTTA LOVE DUFFY!!! What a cute old gentleman. I loved the content of this course. He is an excellent lecturer, very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Has a kind, firm speaking manner and a fabulous lilt. One of my favorite classes at UCSB
AMAZING PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE SUBJECTS HE TEACHES. FASCINATING. Went to school w/ James Joyce's Grandson.
This class was great. Very reasonable amount of reading, one paper, a midterm, and a final. I took this class in the summer, and the only thing I found difficult was attempting to finish the midterm and final into the time alloted. Otherwise, a fun class with good instruction and good material.
Great prof. You can tell he has a passion both for the subject matter and teaching in general. Engaging instruction, even though he does ramble a bit. Understanding, helpful, and really just a nice guy in general.
Professor Duffy is awesome! I love his classes and all of the great stories he has to tell. I also love the way he says "eeehhhh" it cracks me up!
"ehneeweh." very engaging professor, manages to make the class seem smaller by his intense interest in the attention paid by his students. made me sorry i had to take his class again because i ignored the last time i took it only because he's rea
Um, I fell asleep in the class one day and he totally called on me IN A LECTURE HALL OFF LIKE 200 STUDENTS, made me say my name and read out loud. I still think he's the best.
Duffy was so great! He was so passionate about the class and his accent was so entertaining! Tests aren't that bad if you go to lecture and he gives a lot of freedom with the paper. Great class!
Fantastic teacher. Rambles a lot, especially in the honors section, but keeps the class wholly entertaining and fascinating. Extremely helpful (sometimes too helpful, haha, which can be overwhelming sometimes) and willing to talk to you about anything you find interesting or need help understanding. And you've gotta love his accent! Yay for Duffy.
