It's 40% midterm and 60% final. It was really hard because the lectures were straightforward, the problem sets were easy, and the topic questions were not always representative of the exam questions. Lectures suck because professor always seems a little lost. But she is very sweet and willing to help and our head TA Kenneth was also very helpful
The course is made up of 1 midterm (40%) and 1 final (60%), which sounds scary, but as long as you do every problem set, the exams won't be that hard. By the way, the curve is quite forgiving. I got a 87 and ended up curved to a A+.
Grade is entirely based off of a few multiple choice tests (1 midterm will get dropped) so you need to be strong at that, but it doesn't make the class exorbitantly hard since it will be curved at the end (my 77 was curved to a B). Because of that, there is no homework and attendance is not really required but try not to fall behind.
Her exams contains lots of problems. Midterm 1 has 10 MCs in total, 3 versions, and 3 different questions is WRONG. The correct answer is not in the choices. And the exam is sequential! People may encounter 0 to 3 those wrong questions and waste many time on them. She refuse to compensate those who encountered more wrong questions. Ridiculous.
Entire grade bases on solely 4 tests. Her lectures and slides are both hard to understand. I study this course barely from Youtube videos. Honestly, she doesn't deserve to teach here. So confused why a person teaching a course like this could be a professor.
Econ100B online was definitely doable with Professor Yuksel! Watch the lectures, do problem sets, and do section sets and you will be set for the tests. 3 midterms (30 points each, lowest midterm gets dropped) Final (40 points) Overall class out of 100 points. Good luck!
If you take her class, read the book and do all practice problem. There are several questions of definitions which you need to read the book because PPT is not enough and clear. Most of math question show in practice problem. No extra credit no homework. work hard for sure.
Midterm 35%, Final 65%. She goes over exam problems in lecture and she is very helpful and friendly in office hours. Do all review problems on gauchospace and the old exams, read the textbook to nail the conceptual questions, make questions for yourself to answer & watch youtube videos (exchange economy with 2 perf subs preferences). GENEROUS CURVE
yuksel is average at teaching and her lectures are quite dry, but i think she is nice enough. i felt her exams this quarter were pretty fair, also. 35% midterm 65% cumulative final, be ready to teach yourself the material and do a lot of practice outside of class. the curve is pretty forgiving due to difficulty and most students end up getting Bs
Her lectures are somewhat hard to follow, she does a poor job on explaining the topics in a intersteing way while the topics themselves are actually very interesting. I respect that she is a brilliant researcher, but in my opinion that does not make her a good teacher.
Her lecture was focused on concepts, but she didnt go into detail to explain them (while exam questions were specific). She barely covered how to do problems in class, & almost always managed to get confused by HER OWN examples. The topic problems provided for practice were way easier than actual exam problems. 10A was way easier.
For the people who took this Winter of 2018, we had your final as our practice final. I can see why people walked out of that final crying and calling their parents. For us this year, the final was a lot more reasonable. The class only has a midterm and a final, however, so its on you to stay on top of it.
Take 100B with a different professor. She does not do a good job at preparing her student for the exams. Avoid at all costs. She tried doing an example in lecture on taxes and elasticity and had to stop because it confused HER. Really lowered my confidence in my professors ability to relay class material to her students. Do not take this w/her
Probably the most underrated professor I have ever encountered. Yes, the class is difficult, but yuksel tries her best to make sure we understand the material. She provides plenty of practice problems, does midterm/ examples and practice problems during lectures, lectures are clear and not boring, and posts past exams on gauchospace.
Nothing against Yuksel. Very sweet person. But the dam Econ dept at this school is garbage. Lecture slides are garbage. Book: garbage. Problem sets: garbage. UCSB might want to actually try and invest in its students instead of curving an embarrassing 65% avg to an A grade. Greedy institution that couldnt care less about actual student welfare.
Went into the final with 100 percent, I knew my material. All 300 kids were there for the full time(this is v unusual, usually lots finish early). Afterwards kids were calling their parents crying. The final did not test any of the material they taught, I liked yuksel up until the final but only trash teachers do that to their students.
I had a much harder time in 100B than I did in 10A all because I had Professor Yuksel. She is extremely intelligent but she makes understanding the material difficult and puts a lot of teaching into the students' hands. If you can try and take this with another professor, but if you do end up with her make sure you read the text book and old tests.
Her accent makes the lecture hard to understand and makes me hard to concentrate; sometimes makes mistakes when doing practice problems during the lecture. She gave a lot of trick questions on the test and the tests are not easy. She does have great amount of knowledge on economics though. But still, recommend not taking her class if you can.
Despite her having a prominent accent she was a good lecturer. I know a lot of people don't read the book, but it helped me understand the concepts and terms (tests go beyond knowing the math). She occasionally seemed unprepared, also at times I felt like she rushed material (this was her 1st qtr teaching the class). She is awesome at office hours.
New Economics teacher in fall 2015, very hard to understand clearly, does not respond to emails, poor test system with a multiple choice final worth 60% of your grade. Would not recommend this professor to take.
