Best professor in my first year. He makes clear explanations to problems. He writes detailed solutions for multiple questions in each lecture. And he addresses many important concepts while solving and explaining. Math 4B is not an easy class, but Dr. Paul definitely make it better and easier to understand. Homeworks are highly related.
Dr. Paul is an excellent instructor! Although he moves quickly at times, he is very clear and takes care to ensure that everyone is keeping up. iClickers and Graded Problems give you a feel for his exam question style and WebWorks with unlimited tries give you plenty of material to practice with. Take notes and you'll never need the textbook.
Math 4BI was Dr. Pauls inquiry-based differential equations class. He did an excellent job guiding us through the material and explaining the important concepts. He communicated ideas clearly and was an incredible lecturer. The class was a lot of work and skipped over some material, but thats to be expected (since it was inquiry-based).
Great Professor. Not super easy, but if you put in the work, he will make you understand the material very well.
Stepan is definitely one of the best math professors at UCSB. His classes are not easy, but they are manageable. His lectures are very helpful and straightforward. Definitely recommend taking his classes!
He is the best math teacher in UCSB! Very helpful and know math very well. Enjoy his class!
Dr. Paul is simply the best math professor I've ever had. As long as you show up to lecture and pay attention, you will get at least a B.
Paul was an AMAZING lecturer. I took AP calc my sophomore year in high school, got a C in math 3B and was so scared for this class. I went to CLAS, studied with friends, and went to every class and got an A. There's a ton of homework but it's all extremely useful. His midterms were very fair (averages in the 70-80's) but the final was harder
Dr. Paul is one of the best professors on campus, definitely the best in undergraduate math.
Good professor, very knowledgeable but I personally don't like the way he teaches simply because he does not really do examples in class that can be shown in homework/test. 90% of this quarter, I rely on CLAS and online videos to learn the class materials. I strongly recommend the CLAS tutor(I wish he can do 6B next quarter but nah, he can't)
Paul is an amazing professor and one of the best in the math department. He teaches through iclicker questions and writing on the board and he explains things really well. There's homework due every week, but he does drop the lowest score on webwork and graded problems (due in section each week). He curves each test, but not the overall class.
Attended almost every lecture. Going to lectures was helpful. Section not so much. Had 2 clearly explained grading criteria. A normal one where everything like attendance and webwork etc. counts and a slacker genius which is mainly exam dependent. As long as someone in your section takes your hw in you'll be fine. Best math prof. I've had yet
He cares + he has amazing lectures that makes you appreciate math for the duration of the quarter (until you have another quarter of math that's taught by an international professor that doesn't speak a lick of English). Would highly recommend (he's also eye candy for the interested female students).
One of the best professors in the math department - made the concepts really easy! Tests are much easier than homework.
Nice guy.
Best math professor I've taken here at ucsb but his final was really hard.
He is definitely the best math teacher I have had at UCSB and I highly recommend taking his class. He is engaging and really cares that students are learning. The online homework can be a little tedious but it is generally harder than the tests are.
By far the best professor that I have had at UCSB. The Mathematics Department at UCSB is terrible, but this professor is the hidden gem. He actually teaches the material in a manner that students can understand. He cares about his students doing well in his class. I highly recommend that everyone take a math class with this man before you graduate.
avoid at all costs. honest student rating. if you have taken calc before you will do well. if you havent AVOID
Phenomenal professor. Provides tons of examples during every lecture. All notes/examples are written on board, so no typos. Grades the exams according to fair curves (based off average score). Extremely friendly and easy to approach. Humor makes him sound genuine and not monotonous. His exams are straightforward, not meant to trick you too badly.
Lecture is very clear and the professor is energetic. Best math professor so far. The grade is fair, but the tests are a little difficult. However, he actually teaches you everything you need to know in the lecture.
Very good at explaining. Most of the class is written on the whiteboard and it can sometimes be hard to take good notes. The homework was a lot harder than the class work and tests
Good at explaining basic concepts and apply them into solving problems. Need hard work and preview is highly recommend.
Dr. Paul is a phenomenal teacher and you will learn the material in his class, but dont expect it to be easy. I took Math 4BI without taking 4AI and he definitely expects a lot, but I also walked out of the class feeling competent in DiffEQ.
