Nava changed so many things during his (first) time teaching this class. Our first quiz we lost points for wrong answers, then he changed that, among other things. Most of our grade (70%) came from these quizzes. So you really have to hit the textbook and online resources hard to measure up. Offered credit for taking the SAS exam.
nice guy, terrible class.
No HW, instead there are weekly quizzes that make up the majority (70%) of the class grade, 10 questions, m/c, 10 pts per question--but you lose 5 pts for every wrong answer. Sucks. He shows us example code and runs it, talks along with it. I'd rather he let us type it up ourselves so we learn better. Admits to "learning with us". Not a fan.
Worst experience I have had with a professor at UCSB so far (3rd year). Shy in person, tough guy over email. Slides are unclear and littered with mistakes. Isnt proficient at explaining the matieral. Simply not a good professor. Its up to yourself and CLAS to make sense of this class.
This professor connects with his students. He knows the challenges students have trying to pass to the next level of math in order to transfer. Any student with special needs ships take him because he is very understanding. Even though can be crazy and boring, he makes the class fun, especially if he has coffee in his system.
His PowerPoints and exams are full of mistakes. Shy
Nava is an excellent and reasonable professor. His grading scale is very favorable for students and makes us work hard every week as we have weekly quizzes (easy though). Midterms are definitely doable if you put in the time and understand his lectures. I highly recommend this professor.
Such a funny guy. I think he teaches the subject well but if you really want to succeed I suggest taking CLAS or getting a good TA. There are two midterms and a final, and tbh they're pretty tricky. i.e you get -1 points for wrong answers. But its doable as long as you're caught up with material. He also posts slides and past exams which is helpful
Nava is an excellent professor. 120C is a breath of fresh air compared to 120B. He's hilarious and keeps his lectures and homework straightforward. Partner homework and favorable grading scale. I thought the exams were too long for the amount of time we were allotted. Final was difficult. He's great in office hours and promptly replies to emails.
Class materials are very easy (maybe because I took AP Stat in high school, and they are all similar), two midterms + one final, no hw. However, the questions on mts and final are a little bit tricky, but if you clearly understand the materials, you will realize the tricks. Overall, funny professor, easy concepts, easy A.
I took Michael Nava as my first college course. It was a PSTAT5A course i took in 6 weeks over the summer. I had friends who took a different teacher for the same course and all received Ds, whereas mostly everyone in my class got As. He is hilarious and cares. If you are good at math and do the work expect an A. I only studied for an hour.
Went to lecture even though it wasn't required, because he goes over a lot of examples which usually end up on the exams. The last week of classes was used to review old finals. He wants you to do well. If he tries to "trick you" it's usually something he said he would trick you with in lecture. HW not mandatory. Was my first stats class, not bad.
Nava is a great professor! I wish he taught more stats classes. Unlike other stats professors, he's actually really funny and gets to know his students. He posted his lecture notes online, but I still went to class because his lectures were enjoyable. Definitely go to his office hours! He's very nice and extremely helpful with homework.
Put in the work that statistics classes require and you will be fine. Curves very well.
Not clear at all on his powerpoint slides, full of mistakes that are extremely confusing when it comes to all the symbols and letters in stats. Tries to be funny but does not work. Tests are rarely like homework assignments and are difficult. Only positive thing is that he curves well because the entire class does so badly.
No past midterms and finals make this seemingly hard class. Honestly professor does not teach very well, and expects all of us to know the concepts. Did not like the format of the power points. But he does give somewhat easy tests and gives a good curve as well.
The class is not difficult but his lectures and the book are not clear at all. CLAS is your best bet if you want to get an A in the class. Passing the class is pretty easy.
Nava is fantastic. He answers his emails very quickly and frequently. His class was not easy, but he is very helpful and wants his students to succeed. I'm actually going to be taking 120C with him in the fall and I'm very excited. The only thing I didn't quite like about his class was the wording of his exams, sometimes it really threw me off.
Nava is hilarious, super nice & very fair. Despite the other reviews, I think his lectures do give a good sense of direction to what his exams are like. If you do the homework, go to lecture and attend CLAS (with Binh-he's the best!!!), there's no way you can get a grade lower than a B. He's also super helpful during office hours, so go to them!!
First off he's really unorganized. Second most of his lectures are borderline useless, a lot of students stopped going to his lecture midway through the quarter. The best way to succeed in this class is to sign up for CLAS. The class really isn't that hard, Nava and the book are just bad at explaining things.
HORRIBLE prof. Lectures are not organized. He doesn't give you any sense of direction in regard to what's going to be on tests. He's rude, and thinks he's funny. Would avoid at all costs.
I suggest going to office hours and introducing yourself to him. He wants his students to do well and learn the information. I learned PSTAT 120A and B in this class. Lecture notes could be a bit more organized, but he definitely captures the students' attention. Would definitely take another class with him again!
