Most who complain about him fail to understand how helpful his grading scale is and how dedicated he is to actually teaching the material and having the students understand the material rather than stress about flunking. He gives 3 midterms with an optional final to replace the lowest. I absolutely admire this guy and his efforts. Haters will hate.
Kelz is not a bad professor. I do have to admit, he complicates things and makes the math seem more difficult than it is. For his tests, the questions go a little above what was taught in lecture. In other words, he teaches the basics but gives problems that involve more work as you have to apply them all. Do lots of practice problems. They help!
Doesn't explain topics very well. Parts of hwk have nothing to do with lectures.
His lectures are super confusing. He jumps forward and backward in his slides a lot and makes lots of mistakes during his algebra. He does post the lecture slide online but theyre nearly impossible to decipher. If you want to get a good grade go to CLAS right away.
Make sure you go to his class because test will be heavily based on the lecture. The slightest detail he mentioned in class that no one would bother to remember will be in the class. Finals and midterm weigh A LOT in the class. His lectures are boring and if you don't get it, you better ask for help asap.
I got an F on midterm and C on the final, but an A in the class, his grading scale is very helpful.
I thought everything was going pretty well, quizzes were ok, homework was manageable and the midterm wasn't too hard. But, the final, my god the final. It was the hardest and least in line with the course material final I have ever taken, and my grade reflected it, I got a miserable 26%. Beware guys, I strongly recommend finding another professor.
Most CONFUSING class Ive taken!Justin seems nice but his lecture are heavy,he went over so many stuff that we need not to know for the class. He skipped steps during problems, he made mistakes, he used drawing triangles for trig integration instead of the simpler method. His midterm was fair but his final really hits me in the face. Seek for help!
JUST DONt TAKE MATH WITH JUSTIN. HE DOEST EXPLAIN EVERYTHING VERY CLEAR. THIS IS THE MOST COFUSE MATH CLASS I HAVE EVER TOOK. FINAL WERE VERY HARD AND I NEVER GOT C FOR MATH.
Justin really does not care about his students. He spends more time in lecture trying to prove to us how smart he is, rather than making sure we understand the material. The final also screwed everyone over. He purposely gave us problems that were nothing like wed done in class/HW. The CLAS tutors said theyd never seen this class taught so poorly
I have never felt so lost in a math course before. He made the class so much harder than it needed to be. CLAS tutors and students had to correct him in class too often. We never knew what was going to be on the weekly section quizzes or midterm/final. Final & midterm are graded with partial credit and refused to give me points for certain things.
His way of lecturing can overcomplicate the material. The online homework can take a lot of time. But in general if you put in the work you can get a decent grade.
Lectures are purely conceptual. Have no relevance to the actual class. Homework and tests have no correlation and the TAs do a better job of teaching the class than him.
Justin is the best professor I have ever seen in UCSB. His lectures are easy to follow. As long as you attend to the lecture and do the homework, you will get a straight A. He is so patient and nice!!
Justin Kelz is the best math professor I have had at UCSB. He actually does practice problems in class, instead of other professors who just do proofs the whole lecture. The material of the class is a little hard and abstract. If you buckle down and work hard, you should be fine. Also, there are quizzes every week in section.
Grades on a 6 point scale so getting a 3.7/6 will give you a C average. It's super generous. Weekly quizzes in section, 2 midterms and a final. Study definitions for the quizzes starting from the beginning and you should be okay for them. No practice exams, but CLAS is very helpful and they'll provide practice problems for you.
I would not have gotten up for any other 8am. Justin tried his best to crack jokes and keep us up at that early hour. He was really cool and a very nice grader. I would not have gotten as nice of a grade in any other class. I learned so much and enjoyed math for once. I liked that he was easy to follow because he lectures entirely on the board.
Heard his other math classes are pretty good, but 4B was pretty rough based on how he taught it. Purely lecture based, no online notes or practice exams, felt sort of stranded throughout the entire quarter, as did a lot of others in the section. It's a relatively easy class because of his grading scale, but we didn't get to all of the material.
The class was confusing from start to finish. The professor cares about the students and their success, but his grading is harsh and he really makes you work for it. Grades on the "6 point scale" but still incredibly harsh. Much harder than any other Math 8 prof out there, avoid him if you can. HW was honestly super hard, but tests were better.
Kelz genuinely cares that you understand the material. His grading scale helps a ton since his quizzes and exams are pretty damn hard. I did not take calculus in high school but his class was manageable. I regret not going to office hours! He is for sure willing to help
Justin genuinely cares about the success of his students. He really wants you to learn this stuff. Homework is much harder than the exams, and its a good thing. You really learn the fundamentals. His grading scale is interesting, but benefits the student more than anything.
exam extremely hard and there is no practice exam. CLAS really helps a lot
Kelz is a charismatic professor who grabs your attention. The subject is incredibly interesting because of Kelz and has been my favorite math course I've taken at UCSB. My only problem with the course was that the one midterm was during week 4 and there was a large gap between it and the final.
Kelz has a weird grading scale but it's to your benefit. Quizzes almost every section but they're not too hard. He does care about his students and if you're not understanding something during lecture he will stop and explain more clearly. The first half of the course is basically a review of AP Calc AB. Cool guy, getting an A is definitely doable!
