Jackson is one of those mythical professors you hear about from your peers whose competency makes you dissatisfied with your own professors. I made a RMP account just to write this. Lectures are outstandingly concise and clear; the midterm is hard but fair, and with a massive curve. You will learn so much about Native American history.
Great professor, interesting topic. He cares and loves teaching this class, and works with students. As long as you put in the work, you'll do well. Grades pretty fair. Recommended!
Jackson is a great guy with a very easygoing personality. His assignments (there are many) are a drag, but it's a writing class so it's normal. Going to office hours helps with your grade and he likes to see enthusiasm. The topics you have to write about are pretty dry, too. BUT, he's HOT!
Really amazing prof. While most teachers show writing feedback by handing back papers with some red marks on it, he records himself speaking about how he felt about your paper for several minutes; truly cares about your work. Super length assignments that sometimes take all night, but really a great class that he makes apply to everything. 10/10
Loved taking writing 50 with Prof. Wakrentin. Lots of reading (just skim the assigned readings), but as long as you show up to class and put in the work, you should be fine! He makes the class interesting and gives you lots of freedom for thoughts and your final paper (which you build on the whole quarter).
He is a good writing professor. Although the class has a decent amount of work, he helps you through every step/process. You will learn A LOT from this course in terms of writing and researching on relevant issues. He is also approachable and accessible outside of class and willing to offer help in anyway.
Amazing professor! There was a lot of busy work for this class but it prepares you for your final papers. He really wants you to succeed. I have never been a great writer, but he allows his students to take each project and make it your own. Would definitely take another class with him again.
His lectures are straight to the point and he often throws out puns as he explains the events in history. He doesn't expect people to know the exact dates that certain important events happen but rather stresses on the significance of the event and its impact on later eras.
Professor Warkentin is super relatable and makes you feel comfortable in his class. His lectures are entertaining and insightful. You get the sense he really wants you to become a better writer. There is a good deal of writing assigned but that's not specific to this professor. He gives you the creative license to go off script a little.
Good professor. Funny, entertaining, and informative. At times his lectures can be fast paced or mumbled so it can be hard to get down information that might be important for the tests. Very important to go to lecture because he talks about things that aren't in the books. All around a good teacher, TA really determines your grade for the class.
He's a cool and funny guy. He starts his lectures off by playing nice music and his lectures are pretty laid-back but informative. The tests were pretty easy and you'll do fine as long as you know the significance of all the ID Terms that he gives you in the beginning of lecture.
Warkentin is a phenomenal lecturer. He gives you test ID's at the beginning of each class and discusses them in more detail during the lecture. These ID's are what you need to know for the tests but the other information he provides is invaluable. Textbook is great for context but not do-or-die. You're assigned two other interesting books, a paper.
Jackson Warkentin is awesome. He's the reason why I am changing my major to history. He's super passionate about history and his lectures are entertaining. After each lecture, he gives you all the ID's you'll need to know for the midterm & final. He gives great feedback and definitely cares about all his students. Best teacher I have had at UCSB.
Amazing professor. I took his World History class as a GE but ended up learning so much. He's a really great, passionate lecturer and knows his stuff. Be sure to attend lectures because they are both interesting and have essential information for doing well in the class.
Really enjoyed his class, one of the best professors I had in UCSB!
Very chill professor. IDs at the beginning of every class which will be on the midterm and Final. Only thing to do on the tests was define the IDs. which were easy as long as you took notes in class. Bi-weekly quizzes in section. 7 Page-paper that is based on one of two books you read for the class but the books were interesting. Enjoyable class.
Jackson was one of the best teachers I have ever had at UCSB. He is so helpful, intelligent, and truly makes you feel like he wants you to succeed (which is rare to find). He made a class of pure writing not only fun, but worthwhile to take. Plus, he does not require a textbook!
I would say he is an amazing professor just because he really tries to get you to become a better writer and a deeper thinker. He does not have you buy any of the textbooks nor read those awful books. He really focuses on writing as grades are primarily based off of two research papers (6 pages long), but he is definitely a tough grader.
Jackson was an amazing Professor. He helped me grow as a writer. His feedback is very helpful. We only had 2 big essays due and we worked on them in class which helped.
Pro: He is very chill and extremely helpful. We always get out of class early, sometimes we don't have class because he holds individual conferences with students that want extra help. Con: tough grader
