hardest grader I've ever had. I took this for an Art GE and it ended up being one of the hardest classes. He grades very harsh and the grade points don't have much of a range (ie he grades out of 3 or 4 and even one point deduction will result in a B or C). He is a very unpleasant person in general and the class is extremely boring. do not take.
Not exactly an Easy A class. He's extremely critical with a subject which is extremely subjective.
Professor Sturman has a laid-back, coolness to him. His lectures are knowledgeable and interesting. He would include side stories that added to the art and culture. The class structure is easy: weekly T/F quizzes, bi-weekly analyses, and a final paper. Reading before each lecture. No midterm or traditional final. Interesting, manageable class.
It is easy to get good grades. The class is interesting and kind of easy. But professor stuntman is not the kind person to get along with.
Weekly quizzes, make weekly powerpoint presentations, interesting topics and great speaker. I don't know what is up with the poor comments.
Dr. Sturman is really professional about his area. He is really kind and nice. He would discuss with everyone before the final project to make sure that everyone followed up. Really patient and nice!
great prof and class
I would only recommend taking this as a GE if you take it Pass/No Pass. Lots of pointless memorization and very dry lectures if you don't have an interest in Chinese art. International students who speak the language also have a huge advantage with memorization in that memorizing familiar words/sounds is a lot easier than memorizing foreign stuff.
I was amazed by how well Sturman knows about Chinese art history. He is very inspirational and encouraging. If you don't want to read, do go to class and pay attention to his lectures. The exams are partially True or False and partially essay questions. The essay focuses more on the big idea, rather than details. Take classes with Sturman!
Prof. Sturman is very knowledgeable about his subject matter, but seems apathetic about his profession. He doesn't seem to enjoy teaching, is low energy, and speaks in monotone. It seems like he is there for himself rather than his students. Knowledge doesn't make up for his lack of enthusiasm. Makes the rest of class pretty miserable. Sad
He clearly cares a lot about Chinese Art. Unfortunately, he doesn't inspire the same kind of passion or interest within his students. His lectures are dry and difficult to sit through unless you have an interest in the subject. The midterm and final require an insane amount of memorization. Overall, it's not a hard class if you put in the time.
He just wasn't very inspirational, spoke in a monotone... HE GAVE NO SYLLABUS!!! He was also very opinionated about the art, which to me feel like he wasn't doing the course and artwork justice. Ther is also a lot of MEMORIZATION, which I generally don't mine but it is a ton, somehting like 100 objects for the whole course.
I only took this class because I needed to satisfy my art requirement as a GE, but I surprisingly fell in love with Chinese art. He is very passionate and inspires the rest of the class to enjoy the wonders of art as much as he does! Midterm and final are a few multiple choice and blue book! Must memorize images to pass.
Overall Prof Sturman is a easy grader. The lectures can be a little boring and he tends to repeat himself a lot, but going to lecture helps! The exams are pretty straight forward. There is a lot of memorization for the tests but if you go to class and study the images its an easy A! Only midterm, short essay, and final.
I went in skeptical that I would enjoy the class, but I actually really liked it. Prof Sturman is a great lecturer and he makes something so foreign easy to understand. Section is very helpful, overall I really enjoyed his class. Also I dig his hat!
Sturnam is OK. The reading is supplementary. As long as you come to lectures, you should do very well on the tests. He tells you everything you ned to know. However, there are over 40 paintings that you have to memorize for the tests, so keep that in mind. It's an easy class though.
prof. sturman is a very nice guy. his exams are pretty easy as long as you do the readings and memorize the images. however, the lectures can be boring from times since he repeat the same things over and over again pretty frequently. however, i think its a pretty easy and somewhat interesting class to take for GE if ur into chinese landscape painti
Great professor, keeps lectures interesting, and is a very fair grader. I would definitely take another one of his classes again. To get an A you only need to do the basics: pay attention to lectures, read articles in reader, and memorize images.
The class is interesting, especially when the professor's personal experience comes into his lectures. Be ready to memorize and go to class.
Truely passionate about what he's teaching, easy to approach after class. Does not ask for student participation DURING lecture tho. Course contains a LOT of Chinese names (people, places) and MANY images to memorize. Would recommend making flashcards each week. Class would be better for those who are actually into Chinese art.
Interesting class for the most part except there is way too much memorization. Sturman loves what he teaches and it shows. Super nice and chill,, jokes around and wears an awesome hat! Would definitely take more classes from him.
Really enjoys what he teaches and is very approachable if you want to talk about Chinese art. Interesting subject matter if you need to fill a culture requirement. TONS of memorization for the tests though. Otherwise it's a good class.
This professor is very interested in what he teaches and is very intelligent. Lectures can be a little boring, but overall I would recommend this class. You will have to memorize A LOT of images (of Chinese names, dynasties, etc.), but if that isn't a problem, the class is SUPER easy.
Don't take this class if you are taking other art history classes where you have to memorize other images. Save some room in your brain for a billion images on ancient Chinese art, because you will need it.
