Took this my fall quarter as a first year, my FAV class ever and I love this man. Please take a class with him if you have the chance. Tests are easy and there isn't much work, only downside is a research paper towards the end of the course - not harsh graders though. Easy A if you go to class, readings pretty interesting too but not mandatory.

I loved having Anth 2 with Whittle so much that I'm currently minoring in anthropology now. The class was overall super interesting and Whittle showed an obvious passion for the course. He presented material in a way that was very interesting to me.

Whittle was a great professor and I loved going to lecture. However, there was a lot of assignments and the final paper was pretty hard; the TAs tend to grade hard and I went to office hours a lot for help. The material was interesting and I definitely learned a lot in this class that was applicable to real life. I'd reccommend for a GE.

Whittle is an amazing prof!! He cares about his profession, and works hard to make sure the students are equally inspired. Lecture was never boring... it was straightforward and the midterm and final were fair. This was the 1st class I ever took at Ucsb and I would recommend taking it to satisfy a GE.

This was my favorite class I have taken at UCSB so far. Prof Whittle is an amazing professor and he really changed how I see a lot of things in a good way. He incorporated his field work experience into his lectures and kept them entertaining and interesting. I can't say enough how much I loved this class, and I would 100% take it again.

Grades really depend on what TA you choose. Attendance matters. His lecture is slow. Though the lecture talks about thinking emically and etically, I remember some test questions are designed for emic perspectives. Many test questions are from lectures/readings. I like his fieldworks and funny stories. But I am not interested in many topics.

Whittle cares so deeply about his subject and students. I highly recommend office hours, if only to pick his brain. I did several times and left feeling like I understood the content and the world in a new light. For anth2 at least, the class is interesting and pretty easy. I cannot recommend Whittle highly enough. Great guy and a great professor.

This professor is AMAZING. After I took his class in the fall I looked for more classes he was teaching in the winter, however, he is a guest lecturer and was not teaching in the winter. If you are lucky enough to find a class he is teaching TAKE IT. Professor Whittle is so passionate about anthropology and is a superstar in his field.

Matt is super down to Earth and makes lectures interesting. This class has no gimmicks- straightforward path to get an A. All the info you need to know for the exams are covered by the lectures and there is ample review in section. Really don't have to read any of the textbook readings (maybe jot the definitions) but definitely read the excerpts.

Professor Whittle is a great lecturer - funny, clear, engaging. The iclicker music at the beginning of lecture is always fun. Try recommending a song for extra credit. Grade is based on a midterm (mc in class, sa take home), paper (7 pages), section, and final (same as mid). Most important thing to do is read and ask your TA for the tests' topics.

Class was easy, I stopped reading the textbook about 3 weeks in, and was able to do just fine with the lectures. Whittle is passionate about anthropology, and that energy made the class fun. Grade consisted of 1 midterm, 1 7 page paper, and 1 final, all very manageable.

I came into this class thinking I was going to enjoy this class all that much but boy was I wrong. Professor Whittle opened my eyes to the world of anthropology. He is a fantastic lecturer and his exams are fairly straightforward. He also tell some fascinating stories but I guess you'll just have to take the class and find out for yourself.

Very passionate professor and keeps lecture interesting. Complete all of the readings and attend lecture, you should be just fine! Attendance is mandatory because i-clicker. Lectures are available to students so take notes on what he is verbally talking about.

GO TO OFFICE HOURS! Whittle is the most interesting guy I have ever met. His class has taught me so much more than anthropology. There's a 5-7 page paper that sounds scary because it makes up 20% of the grade, but don't worry. It is super simple once you understand the key concepts from lecture. There's only 2 tests each making up 25% of grade.

Professor Whittle is very passionate about his work. He is so enthusiastic and he keeps your attention. The midterm wasn't difficult, just study, and there was an at home portion. Overall, this was a great class!

I love him!! You can tell he really cares about the subject and even if history/anthropology isn't your thing, his attitude really draws you in. Easy class to get an A in as long as you do all the work. Studying for the midterm and final shouldn't be hard since he gives you a study guide. Overall, he's a great guy.

Dude. Take this class. Take it! He's an awesome professor, super interesting and passionate about what he does. It's the best class I've taken so far at SB. Just do the readings, tests are easy. He's super straightforward about what he wants you to know for tests. Uses Iclickers for extra credit.

TAKE THIS CLASS! Not only is Matt straightforward in the powerpoints (which are also posted online), this class really makes you understand that a whole world of different cultures exists outside of our own. The TAs are really helpful with the paper topic, too. Just take this class, period. It's one of the easier ones.

Prof Whittle is so enthusiastic about teaching every lecture. Really knowledgeable and helpful, especially his online office hour before tests. This course is an introductory course so it covers a lot of information and sometimes it kinda bored me. One midterm, one paper, and one final.

Whittle is an amazing professor,so organized and tries to talk about the material in a way that is relatable and comprehensible. Class is pretty easy. Section is 10%, iClicker points for showing up to lecture, and some extra credit. Tests really easy if you pay attention in class, multiple choice. So helpful in office hours. Final paper not too har
