Professor Zheng should be a Harvard professor. 2 in-debates and 2 papers that correlate to the debate. weekly forum posts, but its mostly opinion based which makes it easier. The professor is super accessible and clearly loves teaching Chinese history. Powerpoints are extremely unorganized and hard to understand so attending lectures is helpful.

Professor Zheng is one of the best professors at UCSB. I took her HIST 185B this year. If you take her class, be ready to read 100-200 pages per week and have a quiz every week. The class is hard but also interesting! She is a really good professor and she definitely knows how to teach.Take her class if you have a chance! My favorite prof at ucsb!

Professor Zheng is one of the best professors at UCSB. She is extremely knowledgable about her subject. I learned more in her class than in any of my other classes. Take 185B! Expect to work! Edit: my favorite professor.

She is a very generous grader and her readings are very reasonable. Everyone is likely to receive a good grade. The midterm debate paper is also enjoyable and doesn't require much time. I recommend taking it without hesitation. You'll have a great chance at succeeding in this course.

If you REALLY love Chinese history this course is for you. Strict grader. Though professor Zheng said that "No need to write a long paragraph", you need to write 1000 words a week for the forum post to get full credit or you can only get 2/4. Textbooks are useful(Everything is in the textbook and the reading task is heavy).

Prof. Zheng's lecture is resourceful, but(for Winter 2023 case) if you don't want to write ~800 words for homework that she said "~100 is okay" to get 3.5/4, and write a 7 pages paper in 9 days(without extension it's 7days) and be informed that the final has been changed from take-home to in-person 3 hrs essay writing. Prepare a substitute ahead

Took this course in Winter 2021. Prof. Zhengs lectures are detailed and interesting. She is also very caring. U will have to write and read a lot for weekly forum posts, but they can be really helpful when it comes to the paper (7 pages long). The TA is generous in grading. The final is 2-prompt, each 500-600 words. Choose her if u can.

Took her 185 series when I was at UCSB. I still can remember many of the things she taught me after having graduated for four years. Very inspiring classes and professor.

Professor Zheng is a great professor whose lectures are easy to follow. You have to listen to the lectures to do well in this class. The reading for section was essential. I particularly liked the debate. The discussion became better and more lively when the professor visited sections. I highly recommend 80!

A very good class. I thoroughly enjoyed this class and learned Chinese history in an unbiased and comprehensive way. Readings are well-selected and interesting. This class gave me the much-needed break from my STEM classes last quarter. Professor Zheng is a real gem.

Professor Zheng is super nice and kind, super amiable. Her lectures are slide based with some comments along. With an interest in the course I do not feel the lectures are boring. Readings are crucial for sections. The readings are not overwhelming compare to some other humanities courses. There are two papers, weekly forum posts, and no exam.

I gained a much better understanding on nation-formation after taking this class. Particularly enjoyed the debates, which helped me understand the main points accurately. The professor emphasized critical thinking and encouraged us to express our own opinions, and she created a safe environment for us to do it. I also made friends in this class!

This class opened my eyes about China and Chinese history. The professor was kind and academically rigorous at the same time. She respected students' opinions and pushed us to think harder. She was also very understanding and did everything she could to make this online class normal and engaging. Seriously, my favorite professor at UCSB!

CHIN185A . 3 Years Ago

This class is a pretty run of the mill basic class nothing too exciting. I was hoping we would learn more about the overall culture of the Qing but instead, it felt like we just studied individual people every week. She's nice and accessible outside of class but her lectures and slides are extremely dry. She makes you turn on your cameras too.

Professor Zheng is truly amazing. This class opens my eyes on so many different disciplines and I am also learning a great deal about research. She is extremely caring and definitely wants you to succeed. Papers are graded by TAs. There is a clear grading standard set up by the professor and the professor sent us multiple emails about it.
