BEST OCHEM PROF. He may be messy but overall the class is fair. I prefer him over the other prof.
Funny guy and interesting lectures, although he gets a little off track. Read the book, do practice problems, and do his practice exams (very important)! Copy down relevant problems he does in class and read his handouts, too.
My favorite professor at UCSB. O-chem is awesome if you actually study and try to UNDERSTAND material. Theres no way to memorize the material. Aue's lectures are amazing and the dude is awesome. Write down everything he says during lecture and go back and look at your notes and make sure you've understood. Go to him if you're confused.
Read book throughly (every chapter he assigns) and outline notes!! His lectures are confusing but go and write down everything to reference later. Pay attention to the mechanisms he emphasizes those will usually be worth the most points on tests! Very easy to do well if you put in the effort!
Never went to lecture because I found his lectures disorganized and hard to follow. He likes to bounce around topics a lot and pulls out concepts that are not in the book and puts them on the test. VERY hard to study for since you can't use the book suggested for class to study. CLAS Tutoring is the ONLY thing that helped me pull through.
Great professor but his lectures are very disorganized. Makes his exams just like the practice exams, so if you can do those you will pass the class. It is important to read the book and do as many practice problems as you can as well, but the practice exams are the most important part.
Aue was a really fair ochem professor! Although his lectures can get confusing sometimes because he goes deep into the "why" of certain topics, his tests are mostly surface level concepts. Actual tests are the same format as his practice midterms/finals and he gives a generous curve. SO SO passionate about ochem & overall great professor!
Aue is the man! Tests were extremely fair. I failed the first midterm, but ended up with an A- in the class. The key to success in his class is not doing book problems, but making a sheet to memorize products, reactants, and catalysts, and special conditions for every reaction until it is second nature. Tests are mainly predict products/mechs
Best O-chem professor at UCSB. Test clear. Theory heavy, not just mechs!! Paula killed me, but Aue knows how to teach!!!!
Aue was my favorite out of 3 different teachers I had for the 109 series. Show up to class, LISTEN to the key points he emphasizes in lecture (they will show up on the midterms!), enroll in CLAS. It's not hard to do well in his class if you practice and make study guides for the midterms. His lectures are kind of unorganized but CLAS will save you!
I really liked Aue. His teaching style makes you really understand fundamental concepts in organic chemistry, which is really helpful for upper divisions and for studying for the MCAT. His tests are hard but predictable (very similar to past exam, lecture notes and CLAS problems). If you do the work, you should get an A.
Favorite ochem prof I had at UCSB, and I had gainer and bruice as well. If you want to succeed, don't miss class, enroll in CLAS, and do his old tests! He practically gives you what mechs will be on it, and multiple choice parts of the tests were relatively easy. You will LEARN the WHY of ochem, and it will make it so much better for other quarters
Aue is really funny and makes his lectures interesting with his jokes (usually about relationshipshookupsmarriage & what not). Very fair grading criteria, no tricky problems. Study his old tests and go to lecture & you're set!
GO TO LECTURE. Copy the notes. Do flashcards out of the notes. put in 12-14 hours a week studying. Memorize your flashcards. This is what I did. I got the A. Hardwork pays off. CLAS helps too. You're welcome.
His lectures are kind of confusing and disorganized, though he is humorous at times. He seems to be helpful though. His tests are a mix of conceptual questions, predicting products, and mechanisms. Quite difficult overall, though there is a curve. He posts previous tests online.
GO TO CLASSES! HIS TEACHING IS REALLY CLEAR AND YOU REALLY UNDERSTAND "WHY"THE REACTION ARE ABLE TO TAKE PLACE! MAKE NOTE CARDS! THEY ARE REALLY USEFUL FOR REVIEW! LOVE AUE!!
Had Bruice for 109A&did not enjoy it, did fairly well only bc I begrudgingly did tedious book problems wo actually learning or understanding the reactions. Aue changed my entire view of ochem by making me understand WHY reactions were occurring, I learned to love mechs & ochem. Def go to class, gives a lot of hints as to what he will test on
Aue is the best professor I've had at UCSB. Made me fall in love with organic chemistry. If you want to understand organic chemistry take it with Aue. I loved his lectures he is funny and really smart. A bit unorganized but CLAS helps you organize your notes. He posts his practice tests online and his tests are really similar. 100% would recommend
Aue tends to go off tangent a lot, but his exams are fair games. He gives you practice exams before hand on gauchospace. CLAS tutors also give out similar practice exams. As long as you read, attend class, and make your flashcards you can receive a B at least. The curve also helps a lot.
Aue is an amazing professor. If you show up to lecture and listen, you're guaranteed to get at least a B-. If you do most of the problems in each chapter, you have an easy A. Exams were a joke after book problems. Flash cards are a must if you hate book problems, always remember his explanations for the exams, as he doesn't follows the book
Dr. Aue is an exceptional scientist, but a mediocre teacher. I found him unengaging and uninspiring. Do not recommend.
Aue is very old and therefore has trouble fully articulating the material. But if you read before class from the textbook you should be more than fine. He has old practice tests which are very similar to the actual tests and so practice off of the old tests and go to the review sessions and an A in the class is very easy to obtain.
If there was one thing you can take from him, it's that he's very enthusiastic about Organic Chemistry. You'll enjoy being in lecture if you can share that enthusiasm and you'll pass, but if not, you're going to struggle since his tests reflect a lot on his lectures. No homework whatsoever, but a lot of independent studying.
Aue is amazing. Best Professor at UCSB. His tests are sooo straightforward just go to his reviews and read the book!
