She barely teaches and you won't learn anything. Every lecture is a waste of time, she gives bad guidance on essays and doesn't give good feedback. Just do all the work and choose the easiest essay topics possible. This class is easy enough if you do the work. Avoid if possible.

Overall class grade depended on short writing assignments/quizzes, three essays, and participation. Professor Hammer made her expectations and grading criteria very clear for all assignments. I HIGHLY recommend that you take writing 1 with her.
I got an A- in this class and it didn't kill me to get that grade. Dr. Hammer is a great professor who was clear and helpful. I also liked the class discussions and meeting with her in private meetings was cool. She makes the class interesting and fun.
Hammer's class is a bit tough in terms of the big research paper that is due at the end of class, BUT she helps you every step of the way and makes sure you're 100% prepared to write it. You have to put work into the paper but she is kind and caring and her class is very interesting and taught me a lot about the arts and social sciences.
She really cares about her teaching her students. Also made class consistently interesting by assign cool readings and analysis of writings by people like Bob Dylan and Allan Ginsberg. Definitely glad I had the chance to take this class. If you put the effort into the work and get it all done, you should be fine.
There is homework due every single class meeting, which is a real drag. Everything has to be typed too, even if the assignment is just 1 line long, so it felt like a huge waste of paper. She is very nice and approachable, just expects more of the students than most professors.

Wonderful professor. Though the class was 2 hrs, she has a lot to say and gives you breaks and it doesn't feel that long. We had 3 papers and you peer review but she's always available to discuss. You have a 15 min conference with her after your 2nd paper. She really cares about her students & their work! Class helped me get comfortable w/research.
Hammer is an awesome professor. She is very clear about what she is expecting & although the class is a lot of work, she spaces it out nicely so it's not overwhelming when the final paper is due at the end of the quarter. She is enthusiastic & very approachable! This class is a great class for perfecting your research, analytic & writing skills
She's a very good teacher, you don't have to go out of your way to take he class, but if you get her as a teacher, consider yourself lucky.
I liked this class a lot and especially enjoyed watching Bowling for Columbine. Great movie! She is a fair grader and the class is a lot of work, but also interesting. I also feel like it prepared me for graduate school.
This ended up being my favorite class even though I truly despise writing papers. Take Prof Hammer!! She is a warm and fun professor who will help you read, write, and think critically. Also, the ACE classes are better, so take an ACE class with her if you are able to.
It is practically impossible to get an A in this class. No matter how much you participate or how well you (think) you're doing in your assignments, you will still have a low grade! I like this course but would recommend for people to take it with a different professor!
They should offer more writing classes for Chicana/o Studies majors rather than just one or two every year! Loved this class, good professor too.

BEST professor at UCSB. She was very clear and helpful, her essays were a bit tough at times but i was able to get help with the CLAS tutor we got for her class. She actually takes the time to know her students, definitely recommend her to everyone!

This class is relatively easy, but impossible to get in A in. Any assignment you do great on you get a B. This makes getting an A in the class almost impossible. The textbook was useless.
This was the best class I took at UCSB because it prepares you for the real world. Good prof!
