I hated CS, but Conrad made me actually enjoy it. He's very enthusiastic about the subject. His lectures are little hard to follow and don't seem to be related much to the labs. If you want a good grade, you really need to apply yourself and make sure you're understanding the labs and the material in general. The book is your friend. Take Conrad!
Very good professor; nice and teaches well. The material in the class is pretty simple, especially if you have a background with CS from high school. I might be weird for saying this, but I wish the class was harder.
For CS the material was extremely simple to a fault but he's a good professor.

Conrad is the best CS teacher I've had so far. He's very passionate about his work and getting CS majors passionate about the subject. If you do what you're supposed to, the class isn't hard but you'll still learn a lot.
This was my first computer science class, and it was amazing! Awesome lecturer. I felt like I learned a lot, and I was engaged the whole quarter.

Conrad was an excellent professor. Although there was a lot of work for the class, the assignments were very helpful and helped a lot with studying for the midterms and final. He genuinely wants his students to succeed, and he made himself very available outside of class. Great professor, great class.
Great professor ! Energetic and keeps you interested. Homework might be a lot, and attendance is mandatory, but it DOES pay off at the end. I practically didn't have to study for the exams because I was well prepared already !
Best Professor I've had so far. Extremely clear and just conveys information and the material in such a natural way that it makes the material seem second-nature. Take him.
Phil Conrad is hands down the most amazing teacher I've ever had. He made me remember why math and computer science are fun, when every other math teacher made the material tedious. I wish he taught more classes! He works very hard to make the class both interesting and informative/relevant. Take him!

Professor Conrad is one of the best professors at UCSB. Don't pass up the chance to take any class with him. You'll leave feeling like you've both learned & experienced a lot in a short amount of time. You can tell that he put a lot of effort into designing this class & works hard to keep it on track so say thanks by showing up & doing your best!
Awesome teacher. Truly enthusiastic about teaching, and helping computer science students learn the material. HW forces you to read and go to class, which isnt a bad thing because he is a great lecturer. Tests are easy if you do the hw and study the practice tests. TA was also great. If Conrad doesnt get tenure that will be the worst mistake UCSB
HE IS THE BEST, HANDS DOWN. He has won a Distinguished Teaching award, and you can tell why. He gives homeworks that are due in class to enforce attendance, but these are usually short and help you learn the material better. Tests are easy because he gives a ton of review material. Take this class with him!!
Great professor, one of the best I've ever had. I had him for CS 8 last summer and I cant wait to have him for CS 40 next fall. He gives you great review sheets before all tests and teaches a well structured class

A very interesting and "geeky" funny professor, he really understands the material he's teaching. Accepts all sorts of questions from students during lecture, and builds on the topic with these questions. Assigns homework every day, but these are quick, easy, and greatly help prepare for exams. Also provides many opportunities for extra credit.
He's the only teacher that actually made me kind-of enjoy compsci. His tests are easy if you study his practice exams, and his homework assignments forced me to go to class, but they were easy enough that I didn't mind doing them so much. I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend taking his class if possible! I felt like I learned a lot from this guy!
One of the best teachers at UCSB. Tests are fairly easy if you do the labs and attend lecture. Homework keeps you informed with what's going on. Easy, but Conrad is a great teacher and makes himself VERY available in office hours and otherwise. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
