She will tell you exactly what she wants and if you do not do your papers exactly that way then you will get a bad grade. I was right on the borderline of getting an A- and I even revised a paper but still ended up with a B+. There are easier writing teachers.

There is a ridiculous amount of busy work, she is condescending, and she doesn't seem to like you unless you're overly friendly and responsive to her authority. I was neither. I'm a good writer, and she made me hate this paper and the class. Avoid avoid avoid, Writing 50 should not be this unpleasant.

The class is pretty simple. Go into office hours if you need help because she will tell you exactly what she expects. The final exam did not affect my final grade at all so don't stress about it.

Her class was interesting but not interesting enough to stay awake through. The assignments were easy enough and she provided me with great suggestions as to how to edit my essays.

Dr. L rocks hard. This was a research writing class, and we got to pick our own topics. She knows a lot about a lot and I even learned how to write and revise faster and better. Grad school here I come!

im a terrible writer but for some reason she loved my essays. A's on her essays but a C on the final graded by another professor

She is definitely condescending. As it is a mandatory class, there are students who need less help with their writing. These students seemed to be graded lower because she likes to have her way in how things are done. You will get a good grade if you do things her way and if you actually need her help.

First I was stoked on this class because the topic was abstract and seemed pretty interesting (happiness) but then it was all down hill from there. She's unclear as to what she exactly wants (& she wants something exact it seems) while also trying to be "free-minded." Doesn't work out. The class is do-able, but you do have to try to please her alot

I took her Writing 2LK class; linked sociology. We did about to things related to sociology, but not even interesting. For example we had a sociological analysis of a trend at UCSB; how r we supposed to be sociological when her explanations are so vague? She's a bit condescending, likes to laugh randomly. Do what SHE WANTS and you'll do good.

It seems like some people don't like her teaching style, but I found her suggestions really helpful. The readings were fun and relevant to the Sociology course and the assignments prepared me for other college classes so well that I'm still using one of her handouts to figure stuff out. Better to take a GE that helps!

I disliked her because I found her to be incompetent and useless at answering questions

Great prof. The class is easy enough if you stay on top of your work. You grade yourself with a "Learning Record", so if you do your work you're basically guaranteed an A. I actually improved my writing, too, because Avery is really helpful and gives good feedback. You just can't slack off.

I loved this class. I learned a lot, and the other people probably just didn't pay attention to what Dr. L said at the beginning: if you're not interested, take some other class. The readings are hard but good, and the learning record lets you argue for the grade you've worked for. It's all pretty chill.

If you like writing like I do, do not ever consider taking this class. The teacher is awful and there are a lot of useless assignment. This is the worst class I have taken at UCSB. STAY AWAY! Take writing 2 and take it with another teacher and ENJOY your experience. Don't do what I did or else you will be sorry

I thought this was going to be another one of those boring required classes. But Dr. L made sure that I learned more about how to write effectively, how to think about my audience, and how to be more convincing. She's awesome and really helpful. Take her class!

There was a lot of reading and writing, but it's a writing class, so I guess that makes sense. Dr. Lisa was really nice and helpful and I learned a lot. The learning record thing was a little weird, but now that I'm finished I can see how well it worked.

WRIT2 . 16 Years Ago

The worst class and teacher I have had at UCSB. She assigns a lot of work, peer revising, papers, reading etc that really pertains to nothing. Lisa is really annoying and when you talk to her, seems very condescending. Seriously this is the worst class you can take and the "Learning Record" is the biggest b/s project I have worked on. Stay away!

Lisa is awesome. She provides lots of helpful feedback and direction to help you improve as a writer. Her class is pretty easy. She doesn't give grades on anything and has you grade yourself at the end of the quarter. She has a genuine interest in helping her students and is always willing to help via email or at office hours.
