He is definitely a genius. He said he wants everyone to get an A. Midterm and final were super easy. Class was an easy A. Do NOT procrastinate on the writing requirement, though (which is actually really easy, but just takes long). Keep up with readings and attend lectures because the material is actually quite interesting. Laptops a must.
Must bring laptop to each lecture. At least 4 full pgs w/ small font and extended margins of notes each class plus reading all text. His exams seem easy but multiple answers seem correct. Didn't have a good TA. Teacher is really smart and nice but class had unnecessary amounts of info to retain
Gunn is a genius! Loved his class. He talked fast but tests were pretty easy. As long as you have common sense and you go over the notes in lectures and read all the articles, you will get an A! The final is worth 20% only and writing requriement is easy (only a few summaries of a couple articles)
He is the cutest little old guy! He knows his material very well and I think he is so highly educated in it that he subconsciously makes the material seem more complex than it is. There's one midterm and one final and 3 quizzes in section. His test style is challenging but it is all multiple choice.
He makes the class a lot more complicated than it should be.
I really liked this class. MUST bring a laptop to lecture, he runs through his slides which have lots of information on them, and he doesn't put them online. Do all of the readings. If you study well you will be fine.
Giles does run through slides quickly, and he is very conceptual and cerebral - like everyone else said here. However, he structures his courses well. He won't post slides on Gaucho but his tests are pretty standard. I really liked the books he assigned - all in all a good professor.
Really boring, he makes up his own terminology and is pretty full of himself which is a shame because you can tell he is smart. His tests are kinda hard, but in a really stupid way. novels he assigns are good, but thats about it. Also he came a half an hour late to deliver the final. take it with another professor if you can (I got an A)
Soooooooo dull and boring. Managing to survive his 2 hour long lectures in summer school was rough. He's a very intelligent man, but he knows it and is very high on himself. He refers to himself in the third person and loves himself a lot. All of the questions on the test were multiple choice straight from reading and lecture. Must go, must read.
VAGUE. Take this class if you can understand what Irreconcilable Incommsurability is
Very clear speaker but moves through his power points quickly. Reading notes take a bit of time, but its easier than global 2 reading notes. Very intelligent and has a lot to teach you.
He is an amazing teacher and brilliant man. You learn to love the material. Must go to class and section. TAs are very smart. Gunn goes a bit fast with the slides so you need to learn really fast how to keep up.
Gunn is a brilliant man. You have to work to keep up with him. If you are unintelligent or dont want to work for your grade, don't take the class. Everyone who complains just sounds lazy to me.
This class was awful! Took it jr year & HATED it. Reading notes were SO time-consuming, & the tests were super hard! He goes so fast in lecture that it's impossible to keep up. Not to mention that he just looooves throwing big words around to make himself sound super intelligent. C'mon, dude. Know your audience!
Class was extremely hard considering how much was included on the test that he didn't talk about what so ever. Tests were not designed to test your understanding but to test how much he can trick you. reading is a bunch of jargon. he is teaching a level that it too hard for an intro class. Coffee shop thinker for sure. UCSB, Get rid of this guy!
99.99% of his powerpoints come of the textbook, so you have to do the readings. The lecture is pretty useless. If you have questions on the readings, just ask your TA. Don't take this class for GE! There are better classes out there.
Bring a laptop to class and type down notes. He gets his 90% of his test from the slides, 10% from text.
1st of all, his lectures are all off of his powerpoints which he goes through by so fast, that if you don't bring a laptop to class your hands will cramp up by the end of every class. You can't even pay attention to whatever he's saying because you're trying to get all the notes from the slides. DON'T TAKE BRUTAL! everyone hated it!!
Professor Gunn is a dull lecturer. He often forgets his slides. His tests are confusing because he uses tricky wording and lots of double negatives. I find it disrespectful how he often shows up late for class. I did learn from this class, but it was painful.
Lots of difficult reading. He often forgets his lectures slides. His lecture is rather hard to comprehend especially if you don't keep up with the reading. The amount of reading is rather overwhelming.
His lectures are boring, the concepts are over-analyzed. It shouldn't be a GLOBL class, more like a Sociology class. He missed a few lectures, was unorganized, forgot slides.
Gunn really isn't that bad. All you have to do is listen to the things he stresses in class(which isn't hard) and pay attention to the main points in the review sessions. For all who said his vocabulary is too extensive, cmon!how old are we now? Not hard. The only bad thing was how fast he moved through the slides, just try to catch the main points.
He has a LOT of info on his slides and b/c he is an English prof, he makes the concepts confusing and a bit overloaded. His midterm/final are only worth 20% each which means that you can still get an A in the class if you get a B on the midterm & final. The midterm & final are worded oddly and not all the info is clear. I recommend a diff. prof.
Gunn is an intelligent man who is well versed in the subject matter. But forget about taking halfway decent notes unless you bring your laptop bc he talks SO fast and his slides have exorbitant amounts of info on them. It's not hard to get an A if you read and do the reading notes well. Plus it's a writing GE class without a paper, which is great.
