Amazing class! Definitely take it.
Fantastic professor. Very passionate, you will learn a lot if you put in the effort. If not, except a low B.
The readings are very helpful for the quizzes, midterm, and final, so buying and reading the reader is suggested. Lectures are interesting and she likes to answer questions. Slides are posted online just in case you miss class. The oral history paper is very do-able, just don't end up procrastinating on it too late.
Miller Young is an amazing professor! Her lectures are interesting and extremely engaging, and she posts slides on GauchoSpace. The class was definitely an eye opening experience and one of my favorite courses to date. The reader is a little thick so there's a lot of reading to do but it is manageable.
I loved taking this class! Prof miller-young is an amazing speaker and is very knowledgeable. The class requirements are a midterm, paper, and final, along with six quizzes; all are very fair.
Avoid!
She gives quizzes on readings so go to lecture. It may be difficult if it is your first FEM class but I found the paper assignment interesting and thought the midterm and final was very straightforward. If you do not come in with an open mind you will not succeed in this course. As with most FEM classes the assigned readings are very liberal.
Hands down one of the most inspiring and interesting professors at UCSB. She manages to be bubbly and adorable yet incredibly awe-inspiring and intelligent at the same time. I have so much respect for how she teaches her class, she expects a lot of thought and effort from students, but if you let her push you to succeed this class is life-changing.
Avoid at all costs.
Somehow manages to convey both adorableness and highly intelligent and sharp in her presence. I was able to have a great foundation for feminist writings and I learned a lot from this class. I would recommend her highly, and would take a course with her again.
Best professor by far. Don't graduate without taking one of her classes. She is passionate about the subject matter and it shows. She is also very funny. Really cares about her students. There is a lot of work and reading so be prepared.
uninspiring, disappointing.
I was in the honors section for this class which made the course so much more interesting for me. It was easy to stay on top of readings (a lot at the beginning, lighter as quarter went on) or at least skim enough for quizzes. Tests are reasonable. She is passionate about her class, and a great professor to know outside as well. Highly recommend!
She is very passionate about her research. She assigns A LOT of reading. There are weekly quizzes so you might want to read. She allows you to have a one page cheat sheet for the midterm and final. The documentary she shows in class is very interesting and she also has a day where she plays music videos the whole class.
Really sweet and nice, but terribly unorganized. No structure to the class, didn't really learn much. Just felt like I had to get the stuff done to pass the class.
Easily the best professor at UCSB. Wicked smart, hilarious, and able to keep a 3-hour night class engaging. Anyone who doesn't take a class from her is missing out.
Sexual Cultures:Very interesting subject. Cute and bubbly personality. Is very nice but expects high levels of work from her students. She is very intelligent and it shows in class discussions. Not a lecture class. Very interactive with the material. 3 hour afternoon class can be tiring but is a great course highly recommended to everyone !
Very interesting class, professor is energetic and obviously very interested in her area of study. Just 6 page papers for midterm and final and 'oral history project.' Not hard at all, go to class and you'll get an A. everyone, men and women, should take this class
the reading are good..lectures bore me to death almost everytime... coo movies tho... first half of the quarter is kinda borind, after the midterm it gets better and more interestin...
like the material a lot, but she sometimes comes across as overly strict. however, i love the class, and she is overall a good professor.
