Fun class and fun lectures. Interesting topics. There were a few writing assignments like papers or projects. A few quizzes, but two of them got canceled for our quarter. There are a lot of readings, but I got by only reading the necessary ones for assignments. Interesting easy and chill class.
TAKE THIS COURSE! u will look forward to every single lecture. didn't even mind the 50 pgs worth of weekly readings because i genuinely loved the topics. i will say don't procrastinate the essays i ended up writing a 13 page essay the day before it was due and i stayed up until like 5am doing it. section attendance is graded
Due to the TA strike, my time in this class was very limited, but by far it's the best class I've taken at UCSB. Many readings were assigned but I found them to be engaging, informative, and genuinely interesting. Attendance is mandatory in the section but TAs are very understanding. Overall, I would take this course again if I could.
This class was one of the pre-requisites for the FEMST minor, I was excited about the content of the class but the whole course felt disorganized. While the content was interesting and she clearly cared a lot about the topic and students, in her lectures she would go off on irrelevant tangents. Otherwise, she was very engaging and knowledgable.
FEMST150 was just okay. I was expecting a lot more.
Course content was very interesting. It is clear that she and all the TAs are very enthusiastic about the material. There are weekly forums that you need to post and reply to. 70% of the grade was from the creative project and the final research paper. Overall a good class and I would take Miller-Young again.
Lectures were pre-recorded and quite long but only once a week. Sometimes she'd seemed too busy to teach, but was still very passionate about the content. Lots of readings! Had weekly responses that were based on reading, very short though. There is a midterm, oral history project, and final, but the final was canceled. Graded quite easily.
One of my favorite classes and professors I've ever had. She is so sweet and understanding, and is very accommodating for online school. You can tell she is genuinely passionate about the subject, and it's reflected in her lectures. The TAs grade leniently and a lot of your grade is based on participation, midterm/final, and oral history project.
I love Professor Miller-Young so much! Not only has she been extremely accommodating amidst the pandemic, but she's just a lovely person to talk to outside of class. She's a really cool woman who's also done some incredible projects outside of UCSB. Would highly recommend any of her classes!
Professor Miller-Young is very knowledgeable and passionate about this subject. She is also exceedingly kind, helpful, and smart. Her office hours are actually helpful, especially for projects. The class itself is super informative and helped me make sense of the world we have today. This is one of my favorite classes I ever took at UCSB.
Professor Mireille is so sweet and caring. She made class incredibly interesting with the readings and guest speakers at lecture. 6 quizzes based on the reader, one long essay and one creative project. The class and material is very leftist but offers a valuable perspective on highly politicized issues
genuine and passionate and intelligent. Do the ready and you get an A. DOn't take this class if you aren't willing to put in the work or if u aren't upset with what is going on in the world.
Miller-Young is an amazing professor who knows what she is talking about. She is inspirational, connects with students, and wants you to do well. Her lectures are engaging and I looked forward to going to them. Her information was important for everyone to know in today's world. Would highly reccommend!
One of the best Professors I've ever had. Super caring and sweet, makes controversial topics approachable and takes the content seriously. Lectures are always really interesting and often lead to discussion. LOTS of readings tho, and weekly pop quizzes on them on Mondays. Go to lecture.
Wonderful class. 6 quizzes on the readings over the quarter so it's a good idea to show up to class. Lecture slides are really heavy with information so I'd usually just listen and review later. My TA was an easy grader and I got 100's on everything. Really interesting oral history paper. Prof is super enthusiastic and nice!Highly recommend class!
Lectures are optional. If you do the reading and take notes on them as you read them, you'll do well on the midterm and final. Oral history paper was a really interesting assignment. The grading wasn't too difficult. She missed lectures to take care of her sick kids. She factored that in, and didn't include that info on the tests.
The biggst advice I can give is to do all of the readings and take notes. Spread out the reading so that you arent overwhelmed by it because there is a lot of reading. Seriously, take notes because the final and midterm refer to the readings . There is a quiz on the readings every monday (except when oral history paper is due, quiz that wedneday)
she's interesting to listen to and very informed/smart. the class is a ton of reading, but the readings are interesting. if you do the reading it should be very practical to get an A. her lectures are informational but just reiterate the reading so you really don't have to go unless there is a quiz which is almost once a week. section is mandatory
Dr. Miller-Young is an incredible person, but a scattered lecturer. She missed multiple lectures, said she'd make podcasts of them, and hasn't done so 2 weeks before finals. Classes are based more on conversation than material. Logistically speaking, there are 6 quizzes, a paper, a midterm, and a final. All are fairly easy if you do the reading.
I came into this class thinking it would be interesting. I wanted more from this class, but this class is the main source of my stress at school, to be quite honest. Only if you are passionate about fem studies would I recommend this course.
Miller-Young is incredibly intelligent and well-versed in her subject. But she doesn't really care if students learn. She missed multiple lectures, including the one just before the midterm and skips through slides so quickly that it's impossible to get all the info. She'd be better off having a podcast than teaching.
Amazing professor!!!! Best class ever
The respect that people have for Professor Miller-Young is outstanding. She's an intelligent woman, and her intelligence is well-relayed in how she conducts her curriculum. Anyone that has the chance to take any of her courses is sure to be in for a great treat.
Miller-Young is sensational. She is inspiring, caring, and extremely intelligent. She quizzes almost every week, to ensure that you're doing the readings (which are long but easy and very interesting). Final and midterm and all quizzes are based solely on concepts discussed in class and on readings. Overall extremely recommend both her and Fem60.
