Dr. Santori is a great professor. The students who complain about this class never even show up to lecture. If you want to succeed in this class, don't be as lazy as the people were in my class and actually SHOW up to lecture/section and take good notes. He talks about the readings in detail, which really help with the midterms.
Santori obviously knows his stuff really well, but lecture was super disorganized and hard to follow. He has NO POWERPOINT SLIDES at all. The material isn't too interesting (then again, I'm a global studies major, not poly sci), but the midterm, paper, and final were graded easily. I studied everything last minute but still pulled off a B+.
Santori is obviously very intelligent; however, his lecture style is convoluted and irrelevant. The class was easy to get a good grade in because the subject material was fairly basic, but Santori generally lacks in overall teaching quality.
Santori's Intro To IR class was a mixed bag. The lectures didn't align with the reading material or what would be on the test. His TA had to do the real teaching and had to explain the material every week so that we were prepared for the exams. Lots of reading and one major writing assignment. I recommend TA Jake.
Good lecturer, but he would build up to a theme or main point and then end his lecture or switch topics. Getting a good TA is required for this class. Jasmine Yarish was great during office hours but expects good papers. Hard to focus in lecture, readings only necessary for papers. Mandatory lecture attendance to get an A in the class.
He seems like a nice guy but his lectures were really weird to follow because he didn't have any slides and he made extended metaphors for things that just didn't really click. There was far too much reading to cover/clarify in our sections so that only made things more confusing and hard to follow. My grade ended up suffering. Wouldn't recommend.
Prof. Santori assigns a lot of reading from the textbook and many higher level readings. It is not necessary to go to lectures, I went to all and he covered nothing outside of the texts that appeared on the final or midterm. In his lectures he likes speak broadly and philosophically. Final and midterm were easy and did not cover much of the reading
Lectures were a complete waste of time, teaches in such a philosophical way that relates nothing to the class. Rarely able to understand what he talks about. Sections were helpful however, saved my grade.
Talks and talks in lecture but goes in circles. He makes a main point and then goes off on a useless metaphor or tangent. If it wasn't a pre-req, I'd have dropped it because it just is so boring. I was interested in IR before this class and had high hopes, but Santori is boring and lectures are a waste of time. Just read the books.
stupid pointless lectures -more focused on the philosophy of the class. who the hell plays a movie in class. lectures bore you && not helpful. but seriously DO READ. that is how you will pass this ridiculous class
lectures are disorganized. attendance isn't mandatory but it's easy to fall behind if you dont go. sections are pointless. midterm was easy and i never payed attention. i was interested in IR before but not anymore.
lectures around in circles and it's difficult to understand what the main points he wants you take away from the lecture.
Santori is a great professor. I am not sure why people are giving him a bad review... If you can't read academic journals (or choose not to read them) and understand the lecture, you certainly don't deserve to be a gaucho. Just do your freaking work. People nowadays just expect to get good grades without doing any work. It is absurd.
His lectures appear unstructured at first, but if you can manage to think in theoretical terms (instead of empirical terms) he is an amazing professor. Coming from someone that hated IR prior to his class, I have to say that it was a great expirience. Im taking him for 162 right now and it is very similar to 7. Would definately take again.
Not the best professor. No structure in his lectures. He just kind of goes up there and babels. Avoid him!
By far the worst class I've ever taken. Lectures are impossible to understand, and the prompts are even worse. DO NOT TAKE. I loved international relations before this class, and now I'm changing my major. Please listen to me, avoid at all costs. I am in the honors program and this class was even impossible to me.
PS162 is a great course. You need to attend the lectures and take good notes to understand the topics he assigns on midterms. Do the readings as well. I learned and enjoyed his class probably the most out of any. 2 take home midterms (the second you go without if you just want to duplicate your first score) and take home essay final.
He is a little intimidating at first in my opinion... Very smart and speak eloquently, but going in as a non major is a little scary. I needed help with the papers and he was always available to go over things with me. Sweet man, very smart, but you do have to be dedicated and read the material to do well.
Loved Santori. Extremely bright. At 1st hard to figure out what the point of his lectures are, but you get used to him & it's fine. Show up to class & do the readings-simple. Group final which incorporates an individual paper and group presentation, plus midterm (essay which he gives you the topics for in advance). Fair grader- got an A, but worked
Very dense and confusing material and lectures are hard to keep up with. I recorded every lecture and relied heavily on the recording in writing the first two papers. The final is a 10 page paper that covers material from the entire course.
Santori is a political mastermind with the eloquence to weave theory into contemporary thought. TAKE PS189-modern political theory
Urban Government and Politics. Subject matter difficult to understand, lectures not especially clear. Speaking as a libertarian/conservative, I recommend that anyone who is not liberal STAY AWAY from this class if possible. You will be implied to be "symbolically ****", especially if you are white
What everyone said about his lectures being incomprehensible and totally unrelated to the papers is right on. He might be interesting, but you know you're listening to him ramble and what he says is not going to do much for ya. Took it during the summer, the papers were really hard and graded harshly. Good student - had to work too hard for my B
So I've had Santori for 162 which I enjoyed with him! However, I think PS 1 with him was much more difficult given that it was an into Political Philosophy class. I had to work my ass off for the B+. Santori is a genius but his lectures are not geared to beginners. The paper prompts are very difficult but doable if you seek help VERY early.
