Really great teacher and conveys the information covered in the readings clearly. At times can be very opinionated and biased, but is an overall great professor. READ THE BOOKS.
Great professor! Really passionate about the class. The material was very interesting. There was heavy reading and I rarely read so my grade suffered; I put other classes before this one so I rarely studied for it as well and I wrote my paper a night before it was due. Had I studied, the review sheets she gave were identical to the midterm and fina
She is honestly amazing!
Professor Johnson is one of the most incredible human beings you will meet. She is dedicated to the subject and will motivate you to challenge your perception of the world. Most def reading intensive but you will want the books for your personal library afterwards! LOVE HER!
Professor Johnson is probably the best professor I've had at UCSB and this is the honestly the best class I have taken, coming from an engineer major. The class is eye opening to the real world, and you will learn so much about racism in America. Professor Johnson is very inspirational, funny, and down to earth. Read and go to class to do well!
Teacher was awesome. Terrible class though. TA's take it way too seriously and grade very harshly. Don't expect to do well.
I didn't even care that the class was tough, honestly. Most amazing professor ever, opens up your eyes and is willing to help.
Johnson was an awesome, passionate professor. Her lectures were sometimes disorganized and got off track but I definitely learned a lot. Very eye opening class and has you look at a different perspective about racism in America. Wasn't as easy at I thought it was going to be, but I got a B+ and she made it a little bit more enjoyable to learn.
THIS CLASS IS GREAT! The topics are very interesting and need to be heard by everyone at UCSB. BUT the class was very disorganized at times, like REALLY disorganized. the group project was pointless and the midterm/final were nothing like the review sheets. at the end of the day i did learn alot though
attendance was "mandatory" because of iclickers (which we only used like three times in class wow). the group essay was dreadful and the prompt wasn't given until two weeks before the final. it was too heavily associated with the books read in class. found the class hard but surprisingly ended up with B. can't complain about that
She's confusing and unorganized and had us do "direct action" projects that were sort of pointless. She's passionate, this class was just A LOT of reading, and the last essay was just pretty stupid.
Loved this class! It was very eye opening and Johnson is probably one of the best professors I've ever had. It also helped that I had one of the best TA's ever (Steven Osuna). I will say, however, aspects of the class were very disorganized like the direct action project that was super stressful but overall loved this class!
Professor Johnson is one of my all time favorite professors. I loved the class so much, and she's an interesting person to talk to. Go to her office hours!
Prof Johnson is by far my favorite professor at UCSB. She genuinely cares about her students and the subjects she teaches. I have taken her multiple times and would recommend her to anyone. The class was fantastic in talking about the subject of freedom and what the different definitions of freedom.
I love this class. Besides the fact it is so far off campus, I have a strong interest in learning about the different injustices minorities face in America. This class is good for open-minded people who can take into account different perspectives on these controversial issues. Midterm has essay questions not too hard, got an 85%.
I absolutely LOATHE this class. The New Jim Crow is an interesting book, but all of the tests are based on "The Possessive Investment in Whiteness" which is the WORST textbook I have ever read. Half of the time professor Johnson isn't even lecturing and it's some guest of a movie. All of her text questions are so wordy, they dont make sense.
This professor is brilliant. This is one of the bet classed I've ever taken.
EXTREMELY interesting lecturer and knowledgeable professor. Class was only once a week & going was super important/made reading unnecessary-didn't take attendance though. Books weren't needed-only need them to cite in papers. Overall really good class!
This class was way too much for a pre req class!! We had to go to Skid Row and it was so disorganized, the teacher nor the TAs went and there was no handout! The teacher says she is opened minded but isn't at all! She's a nice lady. Just not good for the class she is teaching. I hardly went to lectures because they were so boring. good luck!
Four books to read. One group project that requires a visit to Skid Row. Papers and Tests are straight forward. She provides a good study guide. Lectures are pointless most of the time. TA grading is a little tough.
Professor Johnson is awesome! The class is tough, but worth it in the end. I've never worked so hard in a class before. There're like 2 "quizzes" which really are like midterms. The class has 5 books to read, which are all really interesting. She is a great teacher and she knows her stuff. She's passionate and will maker her point of view known.
Its confusing to me why this professor has good reviews. Her "lectures" were videos half the time and the other half was disorganized talking that wasn't tested. No guidance given on how to prepare for exams. She was consistently late to lecture but in hindsight it didn't matter because the lectures were of little use to the class.
Really awesome teacher. Knows her stuff. Grade based on 1 book quiz,1 midterm, 1 paper = final, biblio. for final paper. shes extermly nice, and listens to her students. really god quality class, one of the best at UCSB
Very interesting class, learned alot and got a new insight on the world. Be prepared to work hard she is passionate but assigns alot of reading and you can't take this class pass/no pass
