Olivia Walling made it very clear from the beginning that she did not like me. Shes condescending toward students and gets annoyed when students ask questions. Tbh she just doesnt know how to lecture undergrads, dont take WRIT2 with this professor, it was a mess.

How should I put this? The course itself is not hard, I mean just a couple of papers, however, her personality will make this harder than Calculus courses. A lot of "Office Politics", yeah, antagonizing, bullying, and being really mean. She expects you know everything, will be angry if u ask "some" questions, like to make people feel bad

Professor Walling is very knowledgable on what she teaches and definitely gives criticism that helps improve your writing. Attendance is mandatory. She offers a ton of office hours and one on one appointments. If you don't attend, you won't pass. Some assignments were unclear and she gets kinda irritated when students are confused.

Earning an A- in her class was one of my most prized accomplishments. She is tough as nails and demanding. Sink or Swim, the choice is yours. Attend office hours with pre-prepared questions. If you can apply her criticisms without being distracted, you may be able to succeed in her courses. Do the reading, prepare, ask on-point questions, & work.

Terrible lecturer. Directly reads off of her slides. Wouldn't even attend class if attendance wasn't mandatory. The grading that the TA provided was bonkers. Very stupid class imo, a lot of the material is common sense labeled into different ethical frameworks. Extremely boring lecturer.

Worst professor I've ever had, and I've had some bad ones. She outright refused to let me sign up for a time slot for a required presentation, which resulted in me failing the class. She makes you feel stupid if you ask questions. I will be formally contesting my grade. Do NOT take a class with her.

I liked this class a lot--but if you don't have an interest in the subject, don't take it. Walling is a fair grader--but unfortunately, the difficulty of the class comes from the fact that you're forced to learn an entire new way/format of writing, and it's hard to teach that. Ask questions carefully--if you ask dumb questions, she'll call you out.

Horrible experience. Will mark students down based on perceived/preconceived notions. Expects graduate level understanding of subject matter even though an undergraduate class. Highly doubt this level of technicality/rigidity on some random field of study is valid for all majors. Intentionally marks students down infront of the class.

Interesting class. She can be blunt which some can interpret as "mean". She kinda just throws you out into the mess of writing. Argument is key compared to the nuances of legal writing that are harder to teach in a quarter long class. For better or worse she scared off half of the class leading to a quainter, more personal classroom setting.

She had it out for me from the very beginning. Don't know why! Gave me a low grade on my first paper w/ no comments. When I asked her why I received the grade & she went off on me outside of the classroom. She threatened to fail me. I had to petition to drop the class. AVOID HER!!!

DO NOT take her... i wanted to take this class because I am a horrible writer and I was concerned about future writings a would do as a scientist... I truly wanted to improve my writing ability in the sciences... but this class is absolutely pointless and DISAPPOINTING... PLUS she is a hard grader... You are better off taking ENG10...

Pointless class. The first week of concepts was useful (ethical frameworks); everything else was just pointless hypothetical debates. What irks me most is that she lectures DIRECTLY off her notes - she has a speech written out and reads it to us WORD-FOR-WORD in class. She should have just sent me her speeches - no need to go to class!

Please stay away from her and the classes she teaches. It seems like her goal is to break her students self esteem. I left this professors office hours many times with tears in my eyes. I did not mind that this class was hard however, I did mind the fact that she does not know how to teach it. I wasted ten-weeks of my life, learning nothing.

Olivia Walling is a challenging professor but she does a good job in communicating what is expected in participation and assignments. People seem to think she is mean but in reality she just doesn't baby her students, which is honestly refreshing . Take this class unless you can't handle someone telling you that you're wrong.

The grades she gave me seemed fair, the help she offered seemed respectable although I never took any of it. Opportunities to redo papers are given...for a completely new grade. Advice seems helpful. She focuses on what is important in writing...the argument...and sticks to the point. Not a format zealot. Nice person. Somewhat difficult.

Wailing is a kind enough person that would be enjoyable to converse or hang out with as long as you are not within 10 miles of the classroom. She is too smart for her own good, unable to explain out of the abstract. She spreads confusion and frustration like hand-turned butter over a helping of country cornbread. ABSOLUTELY AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

I graduated last year from UCSB and looking back, she was by far the worst professor I ever encountered. I'm now in Law School so she didn't scare me off but she came close... dull and mean... oh and she loves it when you crack your knuckles!

there are professors who are nice as a person, but are terrible as instructors, and there are those who are good instructors but not very nice people. walling is none of those two: she's a terrible prof, and a terrible person. she's a stink to the ucsb writing program. a thinker not a teacher. if she ever reads this: PLEASE do another kind of job.

Hard to get an A. Extremely easy to get a B provided every assignment is turned in. Don't stress out on that group invention project!

The Worst teacher I have ever had. She spends most of her teaching time trying to impress her misguided ideas upon you. She does not accept any logic that contradicts her own ideas. In addition, she forms a bias against certain students and WILL NOT give them a single good grade. Her notes are useless and most of the time, wrong.

Worst teacher I have encountered at UCSB. Not a fair grader AT ALL. Avoid taking Writing classes with her at all costs. She does not accept YOUR OWN opinions and pretty much grades that way. Completely shot down all of my ideas and interpretations of readings in class. Did not help my writing at all...in fact discouraged me from it altogether
