It is not until I started taking upper-div math classes that I noticed how helpful her math 8 was. Her lectures are easy to understand. She explains everything clearly and everyone can see what she writes. I recommand taking her class also because math 8 is important for upper-division math courses, so you need someone who can teach it right.
Great professor who really cares. Tough on rules and grades, take it if you really are into maths
I learned A LOT. Go to all the lectures and read every sentence in the textbook. The syllabus scared me off: 3% for going to the sections, 97% made up by 2 midterms and final. This made me put so much time into this course. I was so pressured. But I indeed built a solid foundation. She is a great professor. The textbook is also useful. .
she's a very good teacher, the class material is just very difficult. super kind and helpful during office hours, and make sure you go to class!!!
She always stops to make sure everyone is keeping up with her so the lectures are easy to understand. Homework is much compared to other Math classes at UCSB, but all those practices are kind of necessary. The exams have a huge curve up, so even 100% is not impossible.
Birge was not very helpful at office hours. Her lectures are super scattered and difficult to comprehend. There is way too much homework which is only worth 5 points of your total grade. Avoid!
Bad just bad homework load is insane made me hate math
H-Z is a wonderful math professor! Her lectures are clear, albiet somewhat fast/rushed. There is a toooon of homework, but it pays off since all of her exams consist of problems from lecture/homework. Definitely take math 8 with her!
Professor Birge is the best professor I've had yet. She makes sure everything is very clear and teaches how to solve problems and think like a mathematician. There is more homework than other classes, and it will be worth it. If you have the opportunity to take one of her classes, you really must do it.
She really is an excellent teacher who really wants to help you understand the material. She sometimes goes too fast, but she asks the class frequently if she is, and then will slow down or explain again. The midtermsfinal are homework problems, but grading is kind of on the harsh side. HW is optional but you should still do it.
Birge is the best math professor I've had so far. She makes the class easy to understand and her class structure helps you get a good grade. No study guide or cheat sheet though so learning the material is still essential.
Best professor I have ever had in UCSB so far. She is extremely smart and helpful.
Birge is awesome. Super nice and considerate. At least in the CCS math classes, she will always listen to the students and the way they want the class to run. Very knowledgeable. Also she brings tea to class for every one and hands out dark chocolate. Great professor!
Clearly brilliant teacher. She does not explain things perfectly. When a student asks a question she simply goes over the proof again verbatim. Despite this she is a good teacher; however, she could take a moment to make sure that she understands the question fully. I would take a class with her again.
she's a really good teacher who explains everything really well and is extremely helpful in office hours. That said this class is very hard in general so just know what your getting into
She's honestly one of the best teachers I've every had. Extremely helpful! Wants her students to succeed. You'll have to do the homework to get the information, but it's totally worth it. Take her. Her tests are VERY similar to homework, often the same problems. Makes upper division math a little less scary
i took birge's class sophmore year and it was the first upper division math I took. She inspired me to continue in my math career, and even gave the whole class money to go study together and buy coffee. shes such a wonderful person and is so willing to help. my favorite teacher in college. class was difficult but if you work hard its fun
She's very kind and dedicated. Don't be afraid that it's too hard, and if you have a question feel free to ask her!
math 117 was hard with birge. A lot of people dropped and a couple people didn't even show up to the final. None of the practice final problems were the same as the actual final problems.
This is one of the best teachers I've ever had in any subject. Good at teaching formal proofs, also makes a lot of helpful intuitive pictures, gives good advice about how to approach the work in her course. Available to students. Exam questions are within reach if you've done HW. Grading policy lets you bomb one midterm without any problem. Great.

oscilating from "fairest friend of all students" to "business-person" to "vamp queen", annoying agressive TA with his girlfriend as "the class first lady". I'm going to study 220c myself.
She is very nice, and has an endearing sincerity about wanting people to understand the material. She's way smart, though, and so she keeps steamrolling ahead at lightning speed. If you alert her to this, she'll apologize and slow down, but she can't help speeding up again. I enjoyed her lectures, but was unable to keep up and dropped the class.
She really explains things well. He accent is a little hard to understand, but she gets the job done. I actually enjoyed math with her. CLAS helps a lot though.
