Rambles a lot without making a point.

CHEM149 . Reich N O 2 Years Ago

His grading rubric was not clear at all. The assignments were graded very subjectively by him and his TA. A lot of reading and writing is awaiting if you want to attend CHEM 149.

Absolutely the most disorganized and least caring professor I have ever seen. Strangest grading and sometimes even breaks promises. Avoid him at all cost. Too bad for rmp to not have 0 as an option.

hes nice, but not the best lecturer. He does the inverted classroom setup but then gets really distracted by random topics and ends up wasting time so you have to work harder on your own time. he also will end up arguing with undergrads and not realize hes wrong so thats frustrating TLDR: hes the super boomer. not bad just not as smart anymore

142A . Reich N O 4 Years Ago

One of the worst classes I've had the displeasure of taking. Reich does not lecture, so you have to teach everything to yourself by scouring the textbook. Smart prof, but with very flawed pedagogy. With the amount of content covered, the lack of actual lectures makes this class an enormous pain, even if you find the subject interesting like I do.

For the love of god do NOT be a biochemistry major in the chem department unless you are positive you want to be a biochemistry researcher. The 1 year lab series with Kalju Kahn is 60-70+ hours of work a week and will destroy your GPA (go see his ratemyprof). Chem majors, Reich is the easier choice for 142A. Premeds, read the first sentence again.

iClickers & in-class assignments are worth about 25% of your grade. Uses a flipped classroom model but doesn't answer any questions once you're in class. He'll throw up questions that aren't pertinent to the material you're going over, but expects you to be able to "think like a scientist." Sarcastic and rude to students. Terrible professor.

CHEM142B . Reich N O 5 Years Ago

great professor, those who complain don't put in much effort and don't do well; it's a tough subject, but reich makes it better. Go to class, study, and you'll be fine

CHEM142 . Reich N O 6 Years Ago

Reich was given a grant to run this class discussion style. It's heavily question based so you have to read the material in detail before coming to class. Very little material presented in class; we usually spend the hour making snarky comments and arguing about answers (biochem banter). The tests are hard with a heavy focus on experimental design.

CHEM142B . Reich N O 6 Years Ago

Asks horribly worded questions ALL the time, on homework, quizzes, and even exams. Part of the challenge is understanding the what he's trying to say. For example, "Compare and contrast the role of Ca2+ as a secondary messenger, and its reliance on calmodulin." Uhh, compare and contrast to WHAT?? Jeez.. You just have to ignore parts of the sentence

CHEM142A . Reich N O 6 Years Ago

He's easily one of the worst professors I've ever had. Can't write a coherent sentence to save his life, unwilling to answer questions, doesn't lecture and expects you to read the terribly written book instead to learn everything. Gives insufficient time for tests intentionally. Unless you are a a genius you'll probably fail or get a C at best.

Mediocre at best. He's trying to employ a new teaching technique that is more interactive which in theory would be great but in practice kind of sucks. His quizzes online and questions in class are full of errors. Also he's rude. He only gives A, B, C, D, and Fs. No +/-s and the class is curved to a C. Try to avoid him.

142BC . Reich N O 8 Years Ago

No matter how hard you try to study, you always get a C on it. He never lectures in class instead he asks question and give assignment. As he says the in class assignment counts 15% of your grade, I attend every single class but I only have 50% in class assignment (smile). You need to learn al the material all by yourself.

142ABC . Reich N O 8 Years Ago

Enthusiastic but very disorganized and confusing. You have to learn everything yourself by reading the whole textbook and in class discussions are not very helpful for midterm/tests. He is trying an experiment where he gives questions (short ans/iclicker) and does not lecture. These questions+online quizzes are riddled with errors

CHEM142B . Reich N O 8 Years Ago

Can tend to be sarcastic at times, especially if you come to class and don't engage in meaningful contributions to class discussion; he will randomly call on people for answers to in class lectures, clicker questions, or short answers be prepared to have SOMETHING to say. Tests can be difficult, but there's a curve.

CHEM142B . Reich N O 9 Years Ago

He does not teach. Learning the material is completely dependent on you. He is rude, but he is smart and willing to help. He spends time on the learning goals but does not teach you the learning goals.

Great prof. Difficult tests, but tried his best to make the material doable. Very passionate about his field.

CHEM142B . Reich N O 11 Years Ago

Reich is VERY knowledgeable and cares a lot about student learning. He stresses conceptual, big-picture understanding of the material over memorizing random details. I appreciated this, but know that you really need to understand the topics thoroughly going into an exam. Midterms were closed notes/ book; final was open notes/ book.

CHEM142B . Reich N O 11 Years Ago

I don't think I have ever given a professor as low of a rating. He did a pretty bad job of covering even the fraction of the material he said he would cover. Completely disorganised. Just read the book and the slides and ignore the lectures.

CHEM142B . Reich N O 13 Years Ago

Reich is tough because he asks a lot of difficult conceptual questions on his tests along with some very specific memorization questions, but he does take some questions directly from the practice tests. The best way to do well in the class is to go to lecture and thoroughly read the book. 142b is a lot of material but Reich is a great prof.

CHEM142B . Reich N O 13 Years Ago

Reich started the quarter off very promising, sharing his enthusiasm for biochem. That changed as he became unwilling to clearly explain answers to questions, instead them by putting them on an exam. He often races through whole chapters days before a test and then berates the class for not studying hard enough.

CHEM142B . Reich N O 13 Years Ago

Very enthusiastic professor. However, expects you to teach yourself a bunch of the material. Not very helpful when you go to his office hours to ask questions. Says that he likes general questions for his exams, but then focuses on small details. Interesting class, but he rushes through everything so fast that you don't have time to enjoy it.

CHEM142B . Reich N O 13 Years Ago

One of the hardest professors in the biochem major. Likes to rush through a whole chapter the day before a midterm, brushing over everything, then blames low averages on the students' lack of studying. If you have to take him, prepare yourself for a quarter of no sleep and little reward.

CHEM142C . Reich N O 17 Years Ago

Norbert is an exciting teacher and the best in the biochem sequence so far. His tests have multiple choice + short answer. Tests are reasonable not hard if you study the textbook and class notes. Norbert is very interested in his work and makes enzymology and genetics exciting.
