Dr. Plane was the kindest professor I've had in the History department. Very helpful and caring towards her students as well as being very knowledgable about the material. A lot of reading but Plane is welcoming to questions and discussion. Highly recommend.

It seems like there's more negativity than there should be. If you work a little bit, you'll do fine. TA's do all the grading. She's very knowledgeable and if you talk to her, she's very willing to help you understand what you did not. Although, at times, lecture could be hard to follow. She's a nice person though.

Extremely boring lectures and not much to help your grade. Way too much information to remember and her "study guide" was just a huge list of questions and vocabulary that you had to answer yourself and memorize. The final was all essays and you needed to remember dates of everything. Take this class only if you really like history.

750 years in 10 weeks! Too much information and Plane makes it more dull than it already is. Her final was cumulative and boring to study for. No midterm, one short paper 2-3pgs, one long paper 6-8pgs. Don't do it! Take a different class with a different professor if you can! Good thing my TA was awesome otherwise I would have failed!

Nice lady, but her lectures and slides are very confusing. She is horrible at lecturing and gives an overload of information in each lecture. No midterm, two papers (one short, one long) and a final. The final is ridiculous. I would not recommend taking this class with her... maybe another professor if you need this course

Pretty confusing as far as history classes go. Every other history class I've taken has dealt with facts, dates, etc. The "analysis" aspect of this class deals more in opinion than solid fact. The grading criteria of the two papers was not made clear (when writing a research paper, one assumes that facts are paramount) and the final was ridiculous.

WORST teacher at UCSB i've ever had. is not understanding in the slightest, way too intense. her first year teaching this course and hopefully last. i do not recommend her whatsoever, totally boring. final was RIDICULOUS, no study guide, had to just wing it when preparing. i give her an F.

I had her a while ago. Loved her class. Learned a lot, although her lectures were sometimes dry in delivery--but material was always interesting. I got a B+ but it required a lot of work to get that. Anyway, its probably just me, but I thought she was a hot older woman. I'd give here a Chilipepper any day!

Plane is a great professor. Yes, her lectures can sometimes be dry. But she chooses interesting material you won't find anywhere else on campus, and is extremely passionate about the subject.

Plane is extremely knowledgeable in her area and very nice. The reading load can be a bit intense, but read it all and attend lectures, and getting a good grade isn't that hard.

I am a student who has always gotten A/A-s on all my assignments. I felt good about all her assignments and received B-/C+ on everything. WAY hard of a grader, the MOST boring lectures, and completely uninteresting material. Worst class/teacher I have ever had at UCSB, except she was a really nice lady.

Worst history professor I've ever had which translated into the worst grade I've ever had. Her lectures don't inspire interest & there's too much reading for a class that's not a DR. Avoid.

Lecture is a little dry but professor is obviously passionate about the material. Extremely helpful outside of class and will help clarify material.

One of the brighter and sharper minds teaching at UCSB. Her knowledge of colonial American history is so extensive! Yah, her class is a tough, deal with it. This is college folks, not high-school. Come to class and do the readings, I promise you that you will get at least a B. She's is such a valuable networking asset too, she can get you an INTSHP

bland lecturer. just read the book, lectures are useless

HIST17A . 14 Years Ago

Professor is really bland. Midterm and final are all based on textbooks and online supplements. Her lectures are quite elementary and do not help much. Consider reading the textbook more than once for a good grade as she tests on very arbitrary things.

HIST17A . 14 Years Ago

I liked her, but she wasn't the most interesting lecturer. However, her tests were very detail oriented; on the midterm she focused on names that would be mentioned in one paragraph out of 4 or 5 chapters. But she definitely knows her stuff and has a passion for it.

HIST17A . 14 Years Ago

A little dull, but she knows her stuff. Stay away from Niccole for your TA. Came unprepared, never showed any enthusiasm, expected us to lead discussion when your average history class will have a couple history majors with 25 people who could care less.

Nice Lady. Make sure you are paying attention in her class. DON'T READ THE NEXUS IN HER CLASS!!! She will call you out on it. There was 2 papers, which were pretty easy if you put some thought into it.

HIST17A . 15 Years Ago

Mixed feelings about this class... It's relatively easy, but it's no fun at all if you've had a few college classes already. It's pretty much oriented like a high school class, and it's VERY facts/dates-oriented. Lectures are bearable, but not interesting. There's certainly not a lot of room for abstract thinking.

Interesting Professor. I appreciate her passion for the material. She does rush through the lecture at the end, but overall I enjoy her class. Do the reading early so you are current with the material.

HIST17A . 16 Years Ago

She's so boring. She spends the entire first part of class talking about her outline for the lecture, and then she always rushes through the important stuff at the end. Always lets us out late.

not a very good professor. her powerpoint slides are extremely vague; they tell nothing about what she's teaching. but her speaking isn't very great, people constantly fall asleep. she's incredibly boring, and doesn't attempt to make her students interested in the subject. take another history course.

I took her upper division colonial history class (pre-columbian). She is hard though! I polled 2 other people in my class who I didn't know, and they said they got C+'s too! Even though my grade didn't show it,I think I grew a lot because of her. History is a stupid class/major this is because plagiarism is rampant, grades are based on badcriteria
