Dr. Ji is one of the best instructors I have ever had. Here's why: He is an engaging lecturer; cares about his students; offers insights into the subject matter that expose why it's worth studying; funny or hilarious depending on the day; deeply intelligent and thoughtful; easy to communicate with outside class; and is a fascinating person.
Ji is a super warm and humorous professor. He cares about his students very much. He is very willing to answer your questions both inside and outside of the classroom. There are two papers and two exams. Papers are based on the assigned documents. The exams include easy multiple choices, fill-in-the-blank questions, and one/ two essays.
Dr. Ji is a great professor whose lectures are very easy to follow. He's also funny and kind. You have to attend class because the quizzes are based on his lectures. The reading for section was light. The grading on tests was generous and the format was simple, one or two essays with a few multiple choice. Overall, a VERY doable class.
He's so sweet and caring towards his students. He's passionate about what he teaches. That being said, I didn't totally love his class. Lectures aren't the most straight forward, you do have to listen and take really good notes aurally because the slides are very simple. No iclicker, but if you don't go, you probably won't do well at all.
I LOVED PROFESSOR JI. He makes lecture very fun. He's an adorable asian man and reminds me a lot of my own grandparents. Just go to lecture and take good notes, you will be 100% prepared for the tests.
Very nice professor. Go to lecture and take notes. Easy A.
I actually enjoyed Chinese and Japanese history in this class last quarter. He's super knowledgeable and also very kind to his students. TA's were alright I felt like I learned more from the professor. Would take another class with him again.
Enjoyed the class. Lectures are good and he is very passionate on his work. Has some very good stories. Easy to talk to during office hours and is very helpful. Would absolutely take again
He's awful. Doesn't have helpful content in lecture and there are a lot of things to memorize. the Ta's offer no help and you are forced to try to manage an understanding of thousands of years of history from the text book and nothing else. don't take this class unless you really want to struggle to pass
the best professor i have ever had! he is really good at lecturing, the tests are very fair. go to lectures, take good notes, you are set for this class! highly recommend!
I absolutely love Professor Ji. His motto is that in order to really learn something, you have to have fun. And he does a great job at following through with this. He is fair and his expectations are clear. He is funny, very intelligible, enthusiastic, and one of the very best professors at UCSB.
Definitely must take if you are at all interested in chinese history. His lectures are very animated. His exams are insanely easy.
The BEST professor I have ever had in UCSB. Did an awesome job in making the lectures fun although the materials seem boring. Assigned analytical papers(in these two classes)which he'd give u good grades if u have great ideas. His tests are not hard if u pay attention to lectures and do the readings. I didn't study for the MTs and got A and B!
one of my favorite professors at UCSB. he is really enthusiastic about the subject and his lectures are very fun and interesting to listen to. his lectures make learning about the subject fun and his exams are, in my opinion, very reasonable and fair.
I fell asleep way too much in his class. He does a great job at lecturing... however, without visual aids, it's very hard to keep up. time periods and events are very easy to mix up. I almost failed the class.
What an awesome professor! By far the best lecturer I've had. Very funny and nice, totally approachable. He really cares about the students and is always willing to help. He made a potentially boring subject extremely interesting. You'll love him.
Very good professor
Prfessor Ji isnt bad, but his TA's are clueless retards. Heidi Morrisson is stupid. Dont take her as your TA. She knows about as much as any random **** that has visited a few other countries.
Funny guy, a bit dorky, but very easy to understand. A bit boring at times, easy to fall asleep to. A lot of the material in lecture is what is found on the midterm/final.
Class is a little boring but he is entertaining. He is pretty dorky and laughs at his jokes all the time yet he does try and make a boring subject better. 2 essays, 1 midterm and the finalhas 2 essays not that hard
Great teacher, tests cover what was taught in lecture. Attendance is almost mandatory, with only 1 section allowed to be missed. Test format is 10 multiple choice, 10 fill in the blank (all not too specific and general) and then 1 essay for midterm, and 2 essays for final. Cake
really nice guy. I didn't really care for the subject that much but he is really funny...in the fact that he laughs at his own jokes...but not lame...good guy...I did end up enjoying his class though.
Prof. Ji is an excellent professor, you can tell he is very passionate about chinese history. The only bad thing about this class is that it tries to cover chinese, korean, and japanese history in 10 wks, which is virtually impossible to do effectively, but he tried his harderst
Boring class. His TA's are practically retarded and are of little to no help at all. He rambles during class and goes over such a small amount of information that its practically pointless to attend his class.
