Taken as a summer class. Prof. Nabi is clearly very knowledgeable but her lectures are not easy to outline. I often found that the book did a better job of explaining some of the topics than she did, although in many cases she contradicted the book and told us to listen to her instead (little confusing). Tests are worded vaguely as well
Did not purchase textbook. The online readings are enough to get you by. The structure is very abstract - broad class. Mainly models. As the course progresses, it gets much easier. One essay - your standard 6-8 page paper. The exams may be tricky, but if you did Mullin you can do this. I didn't have too hard of a time with it. She digresses often.
I don't know why people think she is hard. I just attended lecture and took notes since powerpoints are not posted online. The tests are very straightforward and easy to me. Straight off slides. You don't even have to read since she highlights everything you need to know.
Nabi is a great teacher overall. Very theoretical class, but gives tons of examples that are important for understanding material. No slides posted so you must go to class to get a good grade. Tests are on the harder side, especially the final even though she said it would be easier. Reading is not too necessary, she highlights what you need to kno
Professor Nabi is very enthusiastic about the subject when she teaches but her tests are tricky! I studied hard, attended every lecture and managed a C. The class is very interesting and I learned a lot but I thought I did better than I did because the material seems simple but don't be fooled!
I had her for 117 too and I honestly think shes my favorite comm professor. The subject for 139 isn't particularly interesting, it's more of a psych class but I like the way she teaches. She is clear in explaining everything and telling you what to expect on the tests. She's always throwing out some funny personal stories along the way too.. haha
Great lecturer! Very knowledgable & friendly. GO to lecture, tests are based mostly from her lecture. Nabi is very approachable, and easy to talk to. There's one MC midterm & MC Final. She's one of my favorite professors in the Comm dept. Take her class!!
Great teacher! Her lectures are well organized and power point slides are pretty concise. Does an extremely good job of making class material understandable. Enthusiastic, great energy. Made me want to take other classes she offered.
Professor Nabi is an excellent professor who is genuinely concerned with the students' comprehension of the material. I thoroughly enjoyed her class because she doesn't just lecture, she throws out her own anecdotes; as opposed to a professor that just spouts out concepts and theories. She is very helpful when you don't understand the material.
No paper, just a multiple choice midterm and final. Both tests are extremely challenging. Nabi loves the course material and knows the theories so inside and out. Utilizing office hours is crucial.
boring class, boring style of teaching, boring professor. Has the audacity to call out people who are quietly talking in class. dont recommend.
Loved her! Dr. Nabi was very hard but extremely helpful.
Take her! Interesting and really smart.
GREAT professor! Extremely intelligent and always willing to help her students. Difficult material, so KNOW the material! You will learn a lot of interesting information if you are into the media aspect of communication.
Nabi is one of my favorite professors at UCSB. She is extremely smart, and super funny in a quirky way...you laugh every class period. She explains the material in an interesting way, but to do well, write down everything she says, even her examples. She talks so much and gives so much info that you don't need to read (I didn't at all and got an A)
for tests, u need 2 REALLY understand material, don't just memorize. when taking notes, it helped me 2 write down her examples & how each theory/concept applied to them. comparison 2 mullin is a good way 2 think of tests: must kno SPECIFICS of theories. go to OH to go over test w/ her if u don't do well. i got a As in her classes, it's possible.
Most of the comments are spot on. Nabi knows her stuff and expects you to know it all too. The most honest assessment of Nabi's class is that it exactly what is wrong with the Comm Dept. @ UCSB. She forces you to memorize material you'll forget next week and devalues creative or integrative thought. Don't take this class.
very fun, kind & knowledgeable. earnest in effort to make sure students understand material. excellent in clarifying questions. very accessible outside of lecture. if u can get thru dolly's tests, u can get thru nabi's: be able to understand specifics of & theoret. apply concepts but DON'T UNDERESTIMATE HER EXAMS like i did today for her 117 class!
Very enthusiastic professor but an unfair grader. I studied A LOT for the midterm and was confident afterwords but recieved close to an F. Luckily the paper was graded easy and it wasn't hard to write. Lectures are kinda long and boring.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!! If you thought Mullins was bad, this is just a JOKE. She will decieve you with her enthusiasm, but then when the midterm comes around, you realize they are all trick questions, and you will fail...and i am an A student. Also, i have never gotten below a B on a paper, and i got a D...RUN FOR YOUR LIFE
clear power points, very enthusiastic, tests are MC and short answer, to do well you have to memorize the notes b/c her tests ask for you to recall stuff nearly verbatim, which is doable since they are so clearly outlined/organized. interesting material, she really knows her stuff, really wans to help students do well. One 5-7pg paper, MT & final.
Tests extrememly difficult!
took her for health comm. may seem deceiving because she is very personable and enthusiastic about lecture, but her slides are awful - scattered all over the place and not coherent. also her exams are very hard. do good on the paper and you have a slight chance for a B! exams are thorough and intense mostly from her lectures - not really text.
She is extremly unfair and expects students to know more than is physically possible. Had she put all of her ERES readings into a reader, everyone would have dropped her class the first day because it would have been 4 inches thick. Do not take her, if you think Mullins are hard, they are a picnic compared to her.
