This class is really straight forward and is a great introduction to sociology. The readings aren't too long and are interesting for the most part. Plus every week you watch a movie. If you show up to lecture and do the readings, there's no reason you shouldn't get an A. Gordon also posts key concepts every week which act like a study guide
Professor Gordon was a dry lecturer but who was very passionate about the topics. Lots of reading and very long tests however her sections are helpful and half the lectures have a movie. Try to stay awake but I recommend having at least one friend in the class to take notes as well
this class was soooooooo easy. if you attend class and do the readings you should get an A. I highly recommend taking gordon if you are going to take soc1.
Lectures basically summarize the main ideas from reading assignments. Lecture slides are not posted but every week's key concepts are. No textbook, but homework is long posted readings with guided reading questions. Tests are memorization-heavy, but very straightforward. Two classes per week (1 lecture, 1 movie).
Gordon's lectures don't have much to do with the tests at all. The tests focused on the weekly readings assigned. My TA wasn't the best and would quiz us each week even though other profs didn't. The class was pretty easy and the tests were mostly short answer, some T/F, matching and then an essay.
Material is interesting if you actually pay attention. Everything is taught in Lecture, no slides on Gaucho space. You HAVE to go to lectures or you miss films and slides, which are a big majority of whats on the exams. The readings can be really boring, my advice just remember the titles and authors. Quizlet will be your bestfriend.
Gordon is great, the lectures were interesting and covered real world problems. There is one movie and one lecture a week. The lectures are full of info so be prepared to take notes. The movies are absolutely awesome and get better as the class progresses. Midterm wasn't too hard, and my section was great but nonetheless be prepared to read a lot.
Professor Gordon is a really great professor. She obviously knows what she is talking about and I learn a lot from her lectures. This class isn't for those that want an easy A though. You need to show up for the lectures and films to pass. You have to do the readings and put in the time. 1 midterm and 1 final, graded worksheets with the movies.
The content was interesting but the reading material was really dry. Overall concepts were easy to understand but it was difficult to know what to study for the final.
This class was very eye opening. She gets a bad rap because her class is very challenging, but it is defiantly worth it. Lots of reading and lectures can be dry, but the movies were all interesting and informative. The midterm and final were lengthy, but if you study the reading questions throughly then it is doable.
Tuesdays are lecture days, Thursdays are film days and there are handouts that are due at the end of the class. Powerpoints are minimalistic and lectures are bland. There are lots of assigned readings but you can skim through most of them. Grade is based off of one midterm, one final, participation in section and film handouts.
The material is really interesting, but the lectures are boring. Tests are writing heavy, and most difficult part is probably identifying quotes from readings. Put in a little effort and take good notes and it's an easy A since the material isn't difficult.
The material was extremely interesting and eye opening. Lectures are pretty engaging. I stressed alot about the midterm and final because it's almost all writing, but turns out as long as you cover the main points, your short answer and essay are given full points. The film exercises were a little stressful because of time but are graded easily.
SO SO SO boring. Good luck trying to not fall asleep haha. She shows videos that pertain to the exams so definitely attend class those days. Also when she shows films you have to complete some film exercises which also pertain to the exams. A heavy amounts of readings online but hey we didn't have to buy a textbook.
Do NOT take this class with her. Worst prof I've had at UCSB. Terribly rude attitude toward students and dry lectures but you have to go because she randomly shows movies that are on midterm and final. Information in class is straightforward so good for easy credit, just memorization however I suffered through the quarter because of Gordon. Awful.
Great professor with engaging lectures. Every week she presents a film relating to that week's lecture followed with a film exercise. This course is heavy on reading but most of the articles are very interesting. If you read all of the required material, you should get a good grade in the class.
Don't take this class! Gordon is a cool person but the class is so boring!
The class themes were very interesting but the way the class was set up by Gordon was tedious and unnecessary. It was really hard to come to class and sit there for 3 hours listening to her rant on an on.
While the class was one of the most interesting that Ive taken, it is with no thanks to Gordon. She tries to have minimal ppt use but it's as if she's having a one-sided conversation with us. Go to lecture for the movie notes, section and ask questions, make sure you understand the topic of each reading and you'll be fine. Your TA will be your bff.
I went to all the lectures since I plan for this to be my major anyways, but I don't think it was completely necessary. Most of it went through one ear and went out the other, but film days are mandatory! Tests were very straightforward and the easiest way to ace them is to know your readings. That includes author and title. Do that and you're gold
lectures not necessary and boring af. teaches things you NEED to know. easiest class ever.
Towards the end of the quarter I really started to like Gordon; you could tell that she was so enthusiastic, excited, and passionate about what she was teaching which was really refreshing. READ, READ, READ, go to your TA's for reading questions, and briefly go over lectures and concepts and you should get an A. Make sure you get a good TA!
Great class, a lot of people say her lectures are boring I think its just her voice if you actually pay attention to what shes saying its pretty interesting. Show up to lecture on days she shows movies, do your readings for the midterm and final and you should easily get an A!
She's a good professor and highly respected in her field. I really liked this class, but I know there were a lot of people who didn't. There is a lot of reading, so the reader is really essential but I thought the tests were really easy.
